OK, it’s no secret that I love granny squares. There’s just something about the humble little square that has my heart. There are literally HUNDREDS of patterns, from the classic Crochet Square Motif Pattern to more intricate patterns that I’ll be sharing throughout this post.

🌼 Crochet Starburst Square Motif – Step-by-Step Pattern
🧵 Materials:
- Yarn: 2 colors (Color A = white, Color B = contrast e.g. yellow or purple)
- Hook: 3.5 mm–4 mm
- Yarn needle, scissors
🔰 Abbreviations (US Terms):
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- yo = yarn over
- pc = puff cluster (see instructions below)

🧶 Pattern Instructions
🌟 ROUND 1 – Center Square (with Color A – White):
- Start with a magic ring (or ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring).
- Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), then work:
- (2 dc, ch 2) 4 times into ring.
- After last group, join with sl st to top of starting ch-3.
- You should have 4 clusters of 3 dc separated by ch-2 corners.
👉 Result: a small square with open corners.
🌟 ROUND 2 – Expanding the Base Square:
- Sl st into next 2 dc to reach the corner ch-2 sp.
- In each corner ch-2 space, work:
- (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
- In between corners (sides), place 3 dc evenly.
- Join with sl st.
👉 Result: a bigger square with filled-in sides and corners.

🌸 ROUND 3 – Starburst Petals in Corners (Color B – Yellow or Purple):
This round creates the “flower/star” look in the corners.
For Each Petal Cluster (worked into corner or side space):
- Attach Color B in a corner or chosen side stitch.
- Chain 1 (do not count as stitch).
- Puff Cluster (PC) Stitch:
- (yo, insert hook into stitch, pull up a long loop) 5 times (you should have 11 loops on hook).
- Yo and pull through all loops.
- Ch 1 to close puff.
- Repeat 2 more times in the same corner — for 3 petal clusters per corner.
- Skip 1 or 2 stitches between puffs depending on spacing.
⚠️ Repeat puff clusters only in the 4 corners — not the sides.
- Slip stitch to finish and fasten off Color B.
🧱 ROUND 4 – Border (Back to Color A – White):
- Attach Color A in any corner ch-2 space.
- In corners: (sc, ch 2, sc).
- Along sides: work 1 sc in each stitch and 1 sc in each puff cluster’s closing ch-1.
- Slip stitch to finish and weave in all ends.

✅ Blocking:
Lightly block your square using steam or pinning to make it crisp and flat.
🪄 Optional:
If you want to make a larger motif, continue adding rounds of:
- DC rows with ch-2 corners
- Puff or star stitches in new color
