The beautiful crochet flower granny square

Posted on October 8, 2025

This is a crochet flower granny square, specifically a 3D flower motif pattern. It’s made by creating a raised flower in the center with layered petals and surrounding it with a square border. Here’s how you can make it step-by-step (you’ll need to know basic crochet stitches):

🌀 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

🌻 ROUND 1 – Flower Center (Brown)

  1. Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join to form a ring).
  2. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc).
  3. Work 11 dc into the ring. (12 dc total.)
  4. Join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.
  5. Fasten off and pull the ring tight.

✅ Tip: This round forms a tight circle — it’s the base where petals will attach.

🌸 ROUND 2 – Front Petals (Orange)

  1. Attach orange yarn into any dc of Round 1.
  2. Ch 1, then in the same st work:
    (1 sc, ch 3, 3 tr, ch 3, 1 sc) — that’s one petal.
  3. Sk 1 st, then repeat the petal pattern in the next st.
  4. Continue around until you have 6 petals total.
  5. Sl st to join and fasten off.

✅ Petals should slightly overlap and curl upward — that’s good!

🌼 ROUND 3 – Back Petal Layer (Light Orange)

This round adds depth behind the first petals.

  1. Turn your work so the back faces you.
  2. Insert the hook into the unworked dc stitches from Round 1 (those you skipped between petals).
  3. Attach light orange yarn.
  4. Work (ch 4, 4 tr, ch 4, sl st) in the same st to form one petal.
  5. Repeat around until you have 6 petals behind the first layer.
  6. Sl st to join, fasten off, and turn back to the front.

✅ You now have 12 petals total — 6 front + 6 back.

🌿 ROUND 4 – Leaves (Green)

  1. Attach green yarn in any space between petals (between back petals, not front).
  2. Work (ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, sl st) — this forms a leaf cluster.
  3. Sk to next space and repeat around for 6 leaves total.
  4. Sl st to join and fasten off.

✅ The leaves should peek between petals.

🟨 ROUND 5 – Forming the Square (Cream)

  1. Attach cream yarn to the top of any leaf tip.
  2. Work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp — this is Corner 1.
  3. Ch 1, in next sp work (3 dc) — this is a side cluster.
  4. Continue pattern:
    • (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) for corners
    • (3 dc) + ch 1 for sides
  5. Join with sl st to top of first ch 3.
  6. Fasten off and weave in ends.

✅ Now you have a flat square around your 3D flower.

💎 OPTIONAL – Center Decoration

  • Use sewing thread to attach a small pearl or bead at the flower’s center for a polished look.

🧽 FINISHING

  • Block the square lightly (pin to shape, steam, or damp press).
  • Join multiple squares for blankets, pillows, or bags.
