Step-by-step to make crochet stitch

Posted on October 13, 2025

That’s a beautiful crochet stitch pattern — it looks like a shell or fan stitch variation, sometimes called the V shell stitch or cluster fan stitch. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial so you can make it yourself:

🧶 What You Need

  • Yarn: Medium (Category 4) acrylic or cotton yarn
  • Hook: 4.0–4.5 mm (use what matches your yarn label)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving ends

🧩 Pattern Explanation

Each “shell” in this pattern is made of 5 double crochets (dc) all worked into one stitch or space.
Between each shell is one single crochet (sc) — that’s what creates the wavy open texture.

✨ Step-by-Step Instructions

🌿 Foundation Chain

  1. Make a slip knot.
  2. Chain a multiple of 6 + 2 (for example, 38 chains = 6×6 + 2).
    • The “+2” is for turning and symmetry.

🩵 Row 1 — Base Shell Row

  1. In the 2nd chain from the hook, make 1 sc.
  2. Skip 2 chains, make 5 dc in the next chain (this is your shell).
Skip 2 chains, make 1 sc in the next chain.
  3. Repeat from * to * across the row.
  4. You should end with 1 sc in the last chain.
  5. Turn your work.

✅ You now have little shells with single crochets in between.

🌸 Row 2 — Shifted Shell Row

  1. Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), then make 2 dc in the same st (the first sc below).
→ This forms a half-shell on the edge.
  2. Skip 2 dc, make 1 sc in the 3rd dc (the center dc of the shell below).
Skip 2 dc, and make 5 dc in the next sc (the single crochet between shells).
  3. Repeat * to * across.
  4. At the end, make 3 dc in the last sc (same as the beginning edge).
  5. Turn.

✅ Now your shells are offset — they sit between the shells of the previous row.

🌼 Row 3 — Repeat Base Shell Row

  1. Chain 1, make 1 sc in same st.
  2. Skip 2 dc, make 5 dc in next dc (the middle dc of the half shell).
Skip 2 dc, sc in next dc (the middle of 5 dc shell below).
  3. Repeat across.
  4. Turn.

🔁 Continue Pattern

Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 until your piece reaches the desired length.

🌺 Finishing

  • End on a Row 3 (sc row) so the top and bottom edges match.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Optionally block it gently to shape the shells evenly.

💡 Extra Tips

  • If you want a tighter texture, use a smaller hook.
  • For a lacy effect, chain 3 between shells instead of skipping 2.
  • Use color changes every 2 rows for a striped look — it highlights the wave pattern beautifully.
