Step-by-step to make Crochet Pattern

Posted on February 12, 2026

This is a crochet cable stitch pattern (looks like a braided / twisted cable design). I’ll explain step-by-step how to make it in detail.

This pattern uses:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Single crochet (sc) or half double crochet (hdc) for background
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Front post double crochet (FPdc) – this creates the raised cable
  • Back post double crochet (BPdc) (optional for tighter texture)

I’ll explain a simple version that looks like your picture.

🧶 Materials

  • Medium weight yarn (size 4)
  • 5 mm – 6 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

📏 Pattern Multiple

This pattern uses:

Multiple of 8 + 2

Example sizes:

  • Small sample: Chain 26
  • Blanket width: Any multiple of 8, then add 2

Example:
8 × 3 = 24
24 + 2 = 26 chains

📌 Important Stitches (Very Clear Explanation)

1️⃣ Double Crochet (dc)

  • Yarn over
  • Insert hook
  • Yarn over, pull up loop (3 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, pull through 2
  • Yarn over, pull through 2

2️⃣ Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) — THIS MAKES THE CABLE

Instead of inserting into the top loops:

  • Yarn over
  • Insert hook around the post of the stitch from the front
  • Pull up loop
  • Finish like normal dc

👉 This pushes stitch forward (raised effect)

🪡 STEP-BY-STEP FULL PATTERN

⭐ Row 1 – Foundation Row

Chain 26 (example)

Skip first 2 chains
Dc in each chain across

You now have 24 dc stitches.

Turn.

⭐ Row 2 – Set Up Sections

Ch 2 (counts as dc)

Now divide into blocks of 8:

Work:

  • 4 dc (background)
  • 4 dc (cable section)

Repeat across.

You should have:
4 dc, 4 dc, 4 dc, 4 dc, etc.

Turn.

⭐ Row 3 – FIRST CABLE CROSS (Important Row)

Ch 2

Work 4 regular dc (background section)

Now we cross the cable:

Step 1:

Skip next 2 stitches

Step 2:

FPdc around next 2 stitches

Step 3:

Go BACK to the 2 skipped stitches
FPdc around those 2 stitches

You just crossed them.

👉 This creates the twist.

Then:
Work 4 regular dc (background)

Repeat across.

Turn.

⭐ Row 4 – Plain Row

Ch 2
Dc in every stitch across
(No crossing here)

Turn.

🔁 Repeat Pattern

Repeat:

Row 3 (Cable cross row)
Row 4 (Plain row)

Keep repeating until desired length.

🧵 How the Twist Works (Very Clear)

You are working 4 stitches for cable.

You:

  • Skip 2
  • Work 2
  • Go back and work skipped 2

That crossing makes the braid look.

If you always cross the same direction, it twists the same way.

🧶 Want Thicker Texture Like Photo?

The background in your picture looks tighter.

Instead of dc background, you can use:

👉 Half double crochet (hdc)
OR
👉 Single crochet (sc)

Example for textured version:

Row 1: hdc across
Row 2: 4 hdc, 4 hdc
Row 3: 4 hdc, cable (FPdc 4 crossed)
Row 4: hdc across

That makes the cable pop more.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

❌ Pulling FPdc too tight
❌ Forgetting to go back to skipped stitches
❌ Losing stitch count
❌ Not working into correct post

📏 Making It Into a Blanket

Baby blanket (approx):
Chain 98 (multiple of 8 + 2)

Throw blanket:
Chain 130

Just keep repeating rows.

✨ Extra Tip

If you want deeper cable like picture:

Instead of crossing every other row,
Do:

  • 2 plain rows
  • 1 cable row

This makes longer stretched twist.
