Step-by-step to make crochet heart motifs

Posted on October 27, 2025

That’s a beautiful crochet project — it looks like crochet heart motifs assembled into a rose flower with a green base! 🌹

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make it:

🧶 Materials

  • Yarn colors:
    • Red (outer petals)
    • White (inner petals)
    • Green (base)
    • Gold (decorative embroidery)
  • Hook: 3 mm–4 mm (depending on yarn thickness)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

❤️ Step 1: Crochet One Heart Petal

You will make several of these (white and red).

🪡 Instructions:

  1. Start with a Magic Ring.
    • Wrap yarn around your fingers and make a loop.
    • Insert hook, pull yarn through, and chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).
  2. Round 1:
Work 12 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
    • Pull the tail to close the ring tightly.
    • Slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the starting chain to close the round.
  3. Round 2 (form heart shape):
    • Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
    • 2 dc in same stitch.
    • 3 treble crochets (tr) in next stitch.
    • 2 dc in next stitch.
    • 1 half double crochet (hdc) in next.
    • Chain 1, 1 treble crochet (tr) — this forms the bottom point of the heart.
    • Chain 1 again.
    • 1 hdc in next stitch.
    • 2 dc in next stitch.
    • 3 tr in next stitch.
    • 3 dc in next stitch.
    • Slip stitch to the center to complete the shape.
  4. Tighten and fasten off.
You now have a plump, rounded crochet heart.

✨ Step 2: Add the Gold Line Decoration

  1. Thread gold yarn into your needle.
  2. Starting from the bottom point of the heart, sew a curved running stitch up one side and down the other, following the natural heart curve.
  3. Do this for all petals to create that elegant gold outline.

Make about:

  • 5 white hearts
  • 5 red hearts

🌹 Step 3: Create the Flower from Hearts

Now you’ll assemble your rose using the heart petals.

Inner Layer (White):

  1. Take 3 white hearts.
  2. Slightly overlap the edges of each heart, forming a circular shape.
  3. Sew or hot glue the bottom tips together so they form a tight inner bud.
  4. Curl them a bit to look like rose petals.

Outer Layer (Red):

  1. Take 4–5 red hearts.
  2. Place them around the white inner part, overlapping each one slightly.
  3. Sew or glue the tips to the base of the white hearts.
  4. Shape the petals outward gently with your fingers so the rose opens up.

Now you have a two-tone crochet rose!

🍃 Step 4: Crochet the Green Base (Calyx or Holder)

  1. Magic Ring, chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  2. Round 1: 12 dc into ring, join with sl st. (12 sts)
  3. Round 2: 2 dc in each st around, join. (24 sts)
  4. Round 3: Work in back loops only, dc around. (24 sts)
  5. Rounds 4–6: Continue dc rounds until it forms a small bowl shape. This will hold your rose petals.
  6. Fasten off and weave in ends.

You can optionally make the edge ruffled:

  • Round 7 (optional): (dc, ch 1) around to give a leafy look.

🌼 Step 5: Assemble the Full Flower

  1. Place your heart-petal rose inside the green base.
  2. Sew through the bottom of the petals into the green base using green yarn.
  3. Secure tightly so it stays in shape.
  4. Adjust the petals by hand for a natural look.

💡 Optional Finishing Touches:

  • Spray lightly with fabric stiffener to help it hold shape.
  • Add a stem (a wrapped wire covered with green yarn) if you want a standing flower.
  • You can also attach it to a headband, hat, or gift box as decoration.
