Step-by-step to make Crochet Flower Granny Square

Posted on December 11, 2025

Here is a step-by-step tutorial to make the flower granny square shown in your image (blue flower center + pink border). This uses puff-style petals and a simple DC border.

🌸 SUPER DETAILED CROCHET TUTORIAL – Flower Granny Square

You Will Need

  • Yarn A (blue) – center flower
  • Yarn B (pink) – square border
  • Crochet hook 3.5–4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

🟦 ROUND 1 β€” Blue Center Circle

We start with 12 double crochet stitches.

  1. Make a magic ring
  2. Ch 3 β†’ counts as first DC
  3. Work 11 DC into the ring
  4. Pull the ring tight
  5. Sl st into the top of ch-3

βœ” You now have 12 DC stitches forming a circle.

🟦 ROUND 2 β€” Blue Petal Clusters

We will make 12 long petals.
Each petal = DC3 together + chain 3.

Stitch Breakdown (DC3tog)

Yarn over β†’ insert hook β†’ pull up loop β†’ yarn over β†’ pull through 2
Repeat this 3 TIMES in the same stitch, then pull through all loops.

Work the Petals

  1. In the first DC:
    • Ch 3 (counts as first part of cluster)
    • 2 DC unfinished
    • Yarn over β†’ pull through all loops
    • Ch 3
  2. In next DC:
    • DC3tog, ch 3

Repeat step 2 in all 12 stitches around.

❗ VERY IMPORTANT
You are NOT working in the chain spaces. You are working in each of the 12 DC from Round 1.

Join with sl st to first cluster.

βœ” You now have 12 petals, each separated by a ch-3 space.

🟦 ROUND 3 β€” Forming the Square (Blue)

This round uses chain spaces from the petals.

We will alternate:

  • Sides = DC3tog, ch 1, DC3tog
  • Corners = DC3tog, ch 2, DC3tog

Think: big cluster = corner, small cluster = side.

Begin

Sl st into first ch-3 space behind a petal.

Work the sequence:

  1. Corner (in same space):
    • DC3tog
    • Ch 2
    • DC3tog
  2. Side (next ch-3 space):
    • DC3tog
    • Ch 1
    • DC3tog
  3. Corner
  4. Side
  5. Repeat around β†’ total 4 corners & 4 sides

Join with sl st. Fasten off blue.

βœ” The shape now looks like a wavy square β€” that’s normal.

πŸŸͺ ROUND 4 β€” Pink Double Crochet Border

This round stabilizes the square.

Attach pink yarn in ANY corner ch-2 space.

Corner Formula

(2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC)

Side Formula

1 DC in EACH stitch across.

But here’s the detail:

Each side contains:

  • 1 large cluster (from Round 3)
  • 1 small cluster (from Round 3)
Total stitches per side β‰ˆ 14–16 DC depending on tension.

Steps

  1. In corner space:
    (2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC)
  2. Across the side:
    • DC into the top of each cluster stitch
    • There are 6 cluster tops per side (each cluster has 1 “top”)
    • So you place 1 DC in each cluster top
  3. When you reach next corner ch-2 space:
    (2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC)

Repeat for all 4 sides.

Join and fasten off.

βœ” Now your square is clean, even, and perfectly shaped!
