Step-by-step to make crochet broomstick lace

Posted on October 21, 2025

This crochet pattern in your image is called the “Broomstick Lace Stitch” (also known as Hairpin Lace or Broomstick Crochet). It’s a lacy and elegant stitch that uses a large knitting needle or broomstick and a crochet hook together to create those loops and clusters.

Here’s a detailed step-by-step tutorial:

🧶 Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Medium (category 3–4) acrylic or cotton yarn (light green like in photo)
  • Crochet hook: Size that matches your yarn (for medium yarn, use 4.0 mm–5.0 mm)
  • Large knitting needle or broomstick: Size 20–25 mm (or use a thick marker, dowel, or tube — anything round and smooth)

🪄 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Foundation Row

  1. Chain any multiple of 5 stitches (for example: 25, 30, 35…).
  2. Add 1 extra chain for turning.
  3. Starting in the second chain from the hook, make 1 single crochet (sc) in each chain across.
→ This gives you a solid base for the loops.

Step 2: Create the Broomstick Loops

Now we’ll make long loops with the broomstick.

  1. Insert your hook into the first single crochet of the row.
  2. Yarn over, and pull up a long loop (about 2–2.5 inches long).
  3. Slip this loop onto your broomstick or knitting needle.
  4. Repeat this for every stitch across the row, making sure all loops are the same length.
→ You’ll have a row of loops sitting neatly on your broomstick.

🪄 Tip: You can gently slide the loops along the broomstick to make space as you go.

Step 3: Work Off the Loops (Forming Petals)

Now we’ll turn those loops into the pretty clusters you see in the photo.

  1. Slide off 5 loops from the broomstick and hold them together.
(If you prefer smaller petals, use 4 loops; for bigger, use 6.)
  2. Insert your hook through all 5 loops at once.
  3. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops — chain 1 to secure them together.
  4. In that same group of 5 loops, make:
    • 1 single crochet (sc)
    • 1 half double crochet (hdc)
    • 3 double crochets (dc)
    • 1 half double crochet (hdc)
    • 1 single crochet (sc)

→ This forms one petal cluster.

  1. Move on to the next 5 loops and repeat until you finish the row.

Step 4: Row of Single Crochet

  1. Chain 1 and turn your work.
  2. Make 1 single crochet in the top of every stitch across the row.
(This flattens and secures the previous clusters.)

Step 5: Repeat

  1. Repeat Step 2 (loops on broomstick)
  2. Then Step 3 (petal clusters)
  3. Then Step 4 (single crochet row)

Continue repeating until your piece reaches the desired length.

🌸 Helpful Notes

  • Consistency is key: Keep all loops the same length for a neat texture.
  • Grouping: You can change the look by grouping 3, 4, or 6 loops instead of 5.
  • Color changes: Try changing yarn colors every 2 rows for a striped lace effect.
  • Blocking: For a smooth finish, lightly steam block or wet block your final piece.

💕 Uses

This stitch is perfect for:

  • Scarves and shawls
  • Cardigan panels
