How to make Crohcet Flower

Posted on December 20, 2025

This is a layered puff-petal crochet flower (often called a long-loop or wrapped-post petal flower). I’ll explain it step by step, matching what’s in the photo.

🌼 CROCHET LONG-WRAPPED PETAL FLOWER (VERY DETAILED)

Finished size

About 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) depending on yarn and wraps

🧶 MATERIALS (IMPORTANT)

  • Yarn: Medium (4 / worsted)
    • Green (center)
    • Blue (petals)
  • Hook: 3.5 mm or 4.0 mm
(smaller hook = tighter, prettier petals)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

✂️ BASIC STITCHES YOU MUST KNOW

  • Magic Ring (MR)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)

No advanced stitches needed 👍

🟢 ROUND 1: CENTER (GREEN)

Step-by-step:

  1. Wrap yarn around fingers → make a Magic Ring
  2. Insert hook into ring
  3. Yarn over, pull up loop
  4. Ch 1 (this does NOT count as a stitch)
  5. Crochet 12 sc into the ring
    • Insert hook into ring
    • Yarn over, pull up loop
    • Yarn over, pull through both loops

👉 Count carefully: 12 sc

  1. Pull yarn tail tightly to close the ring
  2. Sl st into the first sc
  3. Do NOT turn

✔ You should see a tight green circle

🔵 ROUND 2: PETAL BASE (BLUE)

Join blue yarn:

  1. Insert hook anywhere in the green circle
  2. Pull blue yarn through
  3. Ch 1

Create spaces for petals:

Repeat 12 times:

  • Sc in next stitch
  • Ch 1

After the last ch 1:

  • Sl st into the first sc

✔ You now have:

  • 12 sc
  • 12 chain-1 spaces (VERY IMPORTANT)

These spaces hold the petals.

🔵 ROUND 3: LONG WRAPPED PETALS (MAIN PART)

This is where the flower texture comes from 🌺
Each petal goes into one chain-1 space

🌸 HOW TO MAKE 1 PETAL (VERY DETAILED)

  1. Insert hook into chain-1 space
  2. Pull up a loop to normal height
  3. Yarn over hook 8–10 times
    • Wrap loosely
    • Do NOT tighten
    • Keep wraps stacked neatly on hook

👉 More wraps = thicker petal
👉 9 wraps is ideal

  1. Insert hook back into same chain-1 space
  2. Yarn over, gently pull up a long loop
    • Same height as wraps
  3. Yarn over
  4. Pull through ALL loops on hook
    • Go slowly
    • Hold wraps with fingers so they don’t twist
  5. Ch 1 to lock the petal

✔ One fat, ribbed petal is done

Between petals:

  • Sl st into next sc (between chain spaces)

Repeat:

  • Make 1 petal in each chain-1 space
  • Sl st between each petal

You will end with 12 petals

🔒 FINISHING

  1. Sl st to secure
  2. Cut yarn (leave 10 cm tail)
  3. Pull through loop
  4. Use yarn needle to hide ends behind petals

🌼 SHAPING THE FLOWER (VERY IMPORTANT)

  • Use fingers to:
    • Pull petals outward
    • Twist slightly clockwise or counter-clockwise
  • This gives the natural layered look like in the photo

❗ COMMON MISTAKES & FIXES

Petals too tight?

➡ Use fewer wraps (7–8)

Petals uneven?

➡ Make sure:

  • Same number of wraps
  • Same pull-up height

Hole in center?

➡ Pull magic ring tighter

Petals curling?

➡ Wrap yarn more loosely

🌟 OPTIONAL: EXTRA FULLNESS (PHOTO-LIKE)

To make it extra thick like the picture:

  • Make 10–12 wraps
  • OR use double yarn strand

🎀 USE IDEAS

  • Join flowers together for garland
  • Sew onto bags
  • Cushion applique
  • Hair clip or brooch
