How to make Crochet Puff Leaf

Posted on November 25, 2025

Great! Here is step-by-step tutorial for the exact stitch shown in your photo.
I will explain every row, every movement, where to insert the hook, how many loops, and how to switch colors.

🌿 DETAILED PUFF LEAF STITCH TUTORIAL

(Exact pattern shown in your picture)

⭐ MATERIALS

  • Yarn Color A (beige in picture)
  • Yarn Color B (white in picture)
  • Crochet hook 3.5–4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

⭐ STEP 1 — FOUNDATION

  1. Make a chain any multiple of 3 (example: 33, 36, 39…).
  2. Row 1:
    • Start in the 2nd chain from hook
    • Make single crochet (sc) across
    • Turn your work

This creates the base layer.

⭐ STEP 2 — ROW OF DOUBLE CROCHET

Use Color A.

  1. Chain 3 → counts as 1 dc
  2. Work double crochet (dc) in each stitch across
  3. Turn your work

This becomes the foundation under the first leaf row.

⭐ STEP 3 — PUFF LEAF ROW (VERY DETAILED)

Switch to Color B.

✔ 3.1 Begin the row

  1. Chain 1
  2. Make 1 sc in the first stitch

✔ 3.2 Creating the puff leaf

You will place each leaf between 2 double crochets (in the space).

Do this:

Inside the space between 2 dc stitches:

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook into the space
  3. Pull up a long loop (height of dc)
  4. Yarn over again
  5. Insert hook in same space
  6. Pull up a long loop
  7. Repeat this 3–4 times
→ You should have 7–9 loops on your hook
  8. Yarn over
  9. Pull through all loops
  10. Chain 1 to close the puff

💡 Tip: Pull the loops long so the leaf looks wide and soft.

✔ 3.3 Continue across the row

Repeat puff stitch in every space created by the previous row of double crochet.

✔ 3.4 End the row

  • Make 1 sc in the last stitch
  • Turn work

Now you have a full row of beautiful downward leaves.

⭐ STEP 4 — SOLID DOUBLE CROCHET ROW (ON TOP OF LEAVES)

Switch back to Color A.

  1. Chain 3
  2. Work dc across the entire row
    • Insert your hook into the top of each puff stitch
    • And into every sc
  3. Turn work

This locks the leaves in place.

⭐ STEP 5 — “WINDOW” ROW (CREATES HOLES FOR NEXT LEAF ROW)

Still using Color A.

This is the row with the small square holes (seen in your picture).

  1. Chain 3
  2. Skip 1 stitch
  3. Double crochet in next stitch
  4. Chain 1
  5. Skip 1 stitch
  6. Double crochet in next stitch
  7. Repeat across the row
→ You will form dc, ch1, skip, dc (open boxes)

These small boxes are where the next leaves will attach.

Turn your work.

⭐ STEP 6 — NEXT PUFF LEAF ROW

Switch to Color B (white in photo, or beige depending on row).

  1. Chain 1
  2. 1 sc in first stitch
  3. Make puff stitch inside each chain-1 space from the previous row
  4. End with 1 sc at the end

Turn your work.

⭐ STEP 7 — REPEAT

Repeat the following 3-row sequence:

  1. Row of Double Crochet (Color A)
  2. Row of Windows (Color A)
  3. Row of Puff Leaves (Color B)

This will create the beautiful alternating leaf pattern exactly like your picture.

🌟 VERY CLEAR STITCH COUNT EXAMPLE

If you begin with 36 chains:

  • Row 1: 35 sc
  • Row 2: 35 dc
  • Row 3 (leaves): about 17 puff leaves
  • Row 4: 35 dc
  • Row 5 (windows): 17 boxes
  • Row 6 (leaves again): 17 puff leaves
  • Repeat…
