This pattern is a crochet cable / basket-weave texture made with front-post double crochet (FPdc) and back-post double crochet (BPdc). I’ll explain it clearly step by step so you can recreate exactly what you see in the photo.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Yarn: medium / worsted (No.4)
- Hook: 4–5 mm
- Basic skills: chain, double crochet

STITCH TERMS (VERY IMPORTANT)
- dc (double crochet)
Yarn over → insert hook → yarn over → pull up loop → yarn over → pull through 2 → yarn over → pull through 2 - FPdc (Front Post Double Crochet)
Yarn over → insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the stitch below → yarn over → pull up loop → finish like dc - BPdc (Back Post Double Crochet)
Yarn over → insert hook from back to front to back around the post → yarn over → pull up loop → finish like dc
👉 You do NOT crochet into the top “V” loops for FPdc/BPdc.
STEP 1: FOUNDATION CHAIN
- Chain multiple of 8 + 2
- Example:
- Small swatch: ch 26
- Bigger piece: ch 42, 50, 58…

STEP 2: ROW 1 (BASE ROW)
- dc in 3rd chain from hook
- dc in every chain across
- Turn your work
✔ This row must be normal dc only
STEP 3: ROW 2 (FIRST TEXTURE ROW)
- ch 2 (does NOT count as a stitch)
- FPdc around next 4 dc
- These 4 stitches will pop forward
- BPdc around next 4 dc
- These sink backward
- Repeat FPdc 4, BPdc 4 across
- dc in last stitch if needed
- Turn
💡 You should now see raised blocks

STEP 4: ROW 3 (CROSSING THE BLOCKS)
This row creates the woven look.
- ch 2
- BPdc around next 4 stitches
- FPdc around next 4 stitches
- Repeat across
- Turn
⚠️ Notice:
- You do the opposite of the previous row
- This makes the texture “cross”
STEP 5: ROW 4 AND REPEAT
- Repeat Row 2
- Then Row 3
- Continue alternating these two rows
✔ The pattern never changes after this

HOW THE PATTERN FORMS
| Row | Stitch Order |
|---|---|
| Row 2 | FPdc 4, BPdc 4 |
| Row 3 | BPdc 4, FPdc 4 |
| Row 4 | FPdc 4, BPdc 4 |
| Row 5 | BPdc 4, FPdc 4 |
This repetition creates the basket weave texture you see.
COMMON MISTAKES (IMPORTANT)
❌ Crocheting into top loops
❌ Forgetting to switch FP/BP on next row
❌ Tight tension (makes fabric stiff)
✔ Keep stitches loose
✔ Count in groups of 4
EDGE STITCHES (NEAT SIDES)
- Always start with ch 2
- End with 1 dc in last stitch
This keeps edges straight like the photo.
