How to make crochet leaf

Posted on October 9, 2025

That crochet project in the image is a tunisian or broomstick lace crochet leaf pattern — it uses a safety pin or knitting needle to create large loops that are later crocheted together. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to make it:

🧶 MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Green yarn (for stem and base)
  • White yarn (for the leaf body)
  • Crochet hook (size 2.5–3.5 mm recommended)
  • Large safety pin (or 5–6 mm knitting needle)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving ends)

🌱 STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL

Step 1: Make the Base (Green part)

  1. Start with green yarn.
  2. Chain 12 (you can make more or fewer depending on the desired leaf width).
  3. Work 1 single crochet (sc) in the second chain from hook and in each chain across.
→ You should now have 11 sc.
  4. Do not cut the yarn — you’ll use it to make loops in the next step.

Step 2: Create Long Loops (Broomstick Lace Setup)

  1. Insert the safety pin (or knitting needle) through your work horizontally to help hold loops.
  2. Yarn over your hook and pull up a long loop (about 2 cm long) from each green stitch.
  3. Place each loop on the safety pin.
→ You should have 11 loops held on the pin.

🧩 Tip: Keep all loops the same length to make your pattern neat.

Step 3: Switch to White Yarn

  1. Once all green loops are on the pin, attach white yarn at the start of the row.
  2. Remove 5 loops from the pin (you’ll work a few at a time).
  3. Insert your hook through all 5 loops together.
  4. Yarn over with white yarn and pull through all 5 loops.
  5. Chain 1 to secure.
  6. Then make 5 single crochets (sc) into the same group of loops — one per loop.
  7. Continue this process:
    • Take the next 5 loops off the pin,
    • Insert hook through them,
    • Yarn over, pull through, chain 1, then make 5 sc.
  8. When you reach the end, you’ll have a pretty lacy white section.

Step 4: Form the Next Row

Now we’ll build the leaf upward.

  1. Turn your work.
  2. Again, insert your hook into the first stitch and pull up long loops (just like before).
  3. Place each long loop on the pin — you’ll again have 11 loops.
  4. Remove the loops in groups (this time maybe 4 or 3 loops per group if you want the leaf to narrow).
  5. Work as before — pull through, chain 1, and make 1 sc per loop.

🪡 Each new row will make the leaf narrower.

Step 5: Shape the Leaf Tip

  1. Continue repeating the pattern, but reduce one loop on each side in each new row (for example: 11 → 9 → 7 → 5 → 3 → 1).
  2. When you have just one loop left, yarn over and pull through to close the tip.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  1. Cut the yarn, leaving a short tail.
  2. Pull it through the final loop to fasten off.
  3. Weave in all ends using the yarn needle.
  4. (Optional) Lightly steam or block the leaf for smooth shape.

🌼 Result

You’ll get a beautiful, textured leaf — perfect for crochet flowers, motifs, or decorations.
