How to make crochet granny square

Posted on October 26, 2025

That’s a beautiful crochet square motif! It looks like a textured floral granny square, made with a combination of double crochet, puff stitches, and chain spaces. The photo shows two colors (teal and cream) arranged in petal-like rounds.

Here’s a general step-by-step guide to make a similar motif:

🧢 Materials

  • Yarn: 2 colors of DK or light worsted weight yarn
    • Color A: Teal (center + accents)
    • Color B: Cream or white (petals + edging)
  • Hook: 3.5–4.0 mm (E–G)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

🧩 Pattern Instructions

Round 1 – Center Flower (Color A)

  1. Make a magic ring (or ch 5 and join to form a ring).
  2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), make 11 dc in ring.
  3. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc total)
  4. Fasten off Color A.

Round 2 – Petal Base (Color B)

  1. Attach Color B in any dc.
  2. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, ch 2, 2 dc in next st, ch 2 repeat around.
  3. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (12 2-dc clusters separated by ch-2 spaces)

Round 3 – Petals (Color B)

  1. In each ch-2 sp, work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) β€” this forms the petal shape.
  2. Repeat around all 12 ch-2 spaces.
  3. Join with sl st to first sc.
  4. Fasten off Color B.

Round 4 – Framing the Petals (Color A)

  1. Join Color A behind any petal tip (between two petals).
  2. Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in same space.
  3. Ch 2, dc in next gap between petals, ch 2, dc in same space β€” repeat around.
  4. Join with sl st to the 3rd ch of beginning ch-5.
(You now have a ring of dc + ch spaces forming a square base.)

Round 5 – Transition to Square (Color B)

  1. Join Color B in any ch-2 corner space.
  2. Work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner sp.
  3. (3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) between corners.
  4. Continue around with 4 corners total.
  5. Join with sl st to first dc.

Round 6 – Shell Border (Color B)

  1. Sl st into next st.
  2. In each side section, work (5 dc in same st, skip 3 dc, sl st) to create scalloped edges.
  3. In each corner, make (5 dc, ch 2, 5 dc) for a rounded square corner.
  4. Repeat all around.
  5. Fasten off and weave in ends.

🌼 Finishing

  • Gently block your square with steam or water spray.
  • Flatten and shape corners for even edges.
  • Repeat and join with other squares using whip stitch or join-as-you-go.
