How to make Crochet Granny Square

Posted on February 1, 2026

this is a two-color crochet granny square with petal corners 😍
I’ll break it down step by step, slow and clear, so you can really make this exact look.

🧢 CROCHET SQUARE – FULL DETAILED STEP-BY-STEP

This square has:

  • Round puff flower center
  • Square shaping
  • Yellow petal corners
  • Final clean border

I’ll explain where to put the hook, how many loops, and what it should look like.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: medium weight
    • Color A (brown)
    • Color B (yellow)
  • Hook: 3.5–4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Needle

BASIC STITCH HELP (IMPORTANT)

Double crochet (dc)

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook
  3. Pull up loop (3 loops)
  4. Yarn over, pull through 2
  5. Yarn over, pull through 2

Treble crochet (tr)

  1. Yarn over twice
  2. Insert hook
  3. Pull up loop (4 loops)
  4. Yarn over, pull through 2 (3 loops)
  5. Yarn over, pull through 2 (2 loops)
  6. Yarn over, pull through 2

Puff stitch (this pattern)

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook
  3. Pull up loop
    πŸ‘‰ Repeat 3 times
  4. Yarn over, pull through all loops
  5. Chain 1 to close

🌼 ROUND 1 – CENTER CIRCLE (BROWN)

  1. Make magic ring
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc)
  3. Make 11 double crochet into the ring
β†’ Put hook inside the ring, not stitches
  4. Pull ring tight
  5. Slip stitch into top of ch-3

βœ… You should see a flat circle with 12 stitches

🌼 ROUND 2 – PUFF FLOWER (BROWN)

  1. Chain 2
  2. Insert hook into same stitch
  3. Make puff stitch:
    • yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop
    • repeat 3 times
  4. Yarn over, pull through all loops
  5. Chain 1

πŸ‘‰ That’s 1 puff

  1. Move to next stitch
  2. Repeat puff + ch-1 in every stitch

Total:

  • 12 puff stitches
  • 12 chain-1 spaces
  1. Slip stitch into first puff

βœ… Looks like a soft flower

🌼 ROUND 3 – TURN FLOWER INTO SQUARE (BROWN)

This is the MOST important round.

  1. Slip stitch into next chain-1 space
  2. Chain 3
  3. In SAME space:
    • 2 dc
    • ch 2
    • 3 dc
      πŸ‘‰ This is Corner #1
  4. In next 2 chain-1 spaces:
    • 3 dc in each
  5. In next space:
    • 3 dc
    • ch 2
    • 3 dc β†’ Corner #2
  6. Repeat around until you have:
    • 4 corners
    • 3 dc between corners
  7. Slip stitch to top of ch-3

βœ… Now it’s a square flower

🌼 ROUND 4 – YELLOW PETAL CORNERS

  1. Cut brown yarn
  2. Join yellow yarn in a corner ch-2 space

In EACH CORNER:

  1. Chain 4 (counts as first tr)
  2. Make 1 more treble crochet
  3. Chain 2
  4. Make 2 treble crochet

πŸ‘‰ This forms a petal shape

Along the sides:

  • Single crochet one sc in each dc

Do this around all 4 sides.

Slip stitch to first tr.
Fasten off yellow.

βœ… Yellow appears only in corners

🌼 ROUND 5 – FINAL BORDER (BROWN)

  1. Join brown yarn anywhere
  2. Chain 3

Corners:

  • 3 dc
  • ch 2
  • 3 dc

Sides:

  • Dc in every stitch
  1. Slip stitch to finish
  2. Weave in ends

βœ” FINAL RESULT

  • Puffy flower center
  • Square shape
  • Yellow petal corners
  • Perfect for joining into blankets
