How to make Crochet Flower Granny Square

Posted on November 22, 2025

Here is a step-by-step tutorial for making the puffy-flower granny square shown in your image.
(You can use any yarn, but DK/4-ply with a 3–4 mm hook works best.)

🌼 SUPER DETAILED TUTORIAL – PUFFY FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE

Image you gave: /mnt/data/V298.jpg
(You do not need to open it β€” I will explain step by step.)

🧡 Yarn & Hook

  • Green (Color A)
  • White (Color B)
  • Hook 3.0–4.0 mm depending on yarn
  • Scissors
  • Needle

⭐ ROUND 1 – CENTER (Green)

1. Magic Ring

  • Wrap yarn around two fingers.
  • Insert hook under the first loop, grab second loop, pull through.

2. Form the base

  • Ch 1 (just to secure ring).

3. Work stitches into ring

You need 12 half-double crochet (hdc).

Each hdc:

  • Yarn over
  • Insert hook into the ring
  • Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
  • Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops

Repeat this 12 times.

4. Close the round

  • Pull the tail to tighten the ring
  • Slip stitch into the first hdc.

You now have a neat circle with 12 stitches.

⭐ ROUND 2 – GREEN PETAL BASE (Elongated Stitches)

This round builds tall green β€œspikes” behind the white petals.

1. Ch 2 (gives height)

2. In the next stitch:

We make a 4-loop tall hdc cluster (not puff, not dc).

Steps:

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook into stitch
  3. Pull up a long loop (stretch it ~1 cm)
  4. Repeat this 3 more times (total 4 long loops on hook + the starting loop = 5 loops)
  5. Yarn over, pull through ALL loops
  6. Chain 1 to lock it

β†’ You made 1 elongated petal base.

3. Repeat this in every stitch around

  • 1 elongated cluster
  • Ch 1
    Do this 12 times.

4. Slip stitch to finish.

You now have a green sunburst shape.

⭐ ROUND 3 – WHITE PUFF PETALS

These are the big white 3D petals.

Where to insert hook:

Into the ch-1 spaces between the green elongated stitches.

Puff Stitch (super detailed):

Each puff = 6 or 7 pulls:

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook into space
  3. Pull up a long loop (tall!)
  4. Yarn over
  5. Insert again
  6. Pull up loop
  7. Repeat until you have 13–15 loops on the hook

Then:

  • Yarn over
  • Pull through all loops (you may hold loops with thumb)
  • Chain 1 tightly to lock puff

Make 1 puff in every space around = 12 petals

Finish with slip stitch.

Your flower now pops beautifully.

⭐ ROUND 4 – TURN INTO A SQUARE (Green)

Switch back to Green.

Placement:

Insert hook between two puff petals (not on top).

For each corner:

Work:

  • 2 double crochets (dc)
  • Chain 2
  • 2 dc again in the same space

For each side section:

There are 2 spaces between the corners.
In each space work:

  • 3 dc

So the pattern per side is:

Corner β†’ 3dc β†’ 3dc β†’ Corner

After all 4 sides, join with slip stitch.

Your square shape is now formed.

⭐ ROUND 5 – BORDER ROW (Green)

This round makes the edges perfect and neat.

1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)

2. Work across the side:

  • 1 dc into every stitch

3. In each corner space:

  • 2 dc
  • Ch 2
  • 2 dc

Work all around. Join with slip stitch.

Cut yarn. Weave ends.

🌼 You Are Done!

You now have the exact 3D puff-flower granny square in your picture.
