How to make Crochet Flower

Posted on February 13, 2026

step-by-step guide to make this small crochet spiral rose 🌹

🧢 Crochet Spiral Rose (Detailed Pattern)

πŸ“Œ Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch

🌸 PART 1: FOUNDATION

Step 1: Slip Knot

  • Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.

Step 2: Chain

  • Chain 31 stitches
(You can adjust: 26 = small, 36+ = bigger rose)

🌸 PART 2: SHAPING THE STRIP

You will now work into the chain to create a strip that naturally curls.

Row 1 (work into chain)

πŸ‘‰ Skip the first chain from hook

Now follow this sequence:

  1. In next stitch:
    • 1 sc
  2. Next stitch:
    • 1 hdc
  3. Next stitch:
    • 1 dc

Continue across remaining chains:

πŸ‘‰ In EVERY stitch:

  • Make 2 dc in each stitch

βœ” This increase is what causes the strip to curl into a spiral.

🌸 PART 3: MAKING PETALS

Now we create the decorative edge that looks like petals.

Option A (simple rose – closer to your picture)

In each stitch across:

  • (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in same stitch

Option B (fuller rose – more layered)

In each stitch:

  • (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same stitch

Important:

  • Do NOT skip stitches
  • Work everything into the same base row stitches

🌸 PART 4: FINISHING THE STRIP

  • When you reach the end:
    • Cut yarn
    • Leave a long tail (about 15–20 cm)

🌸 PART 5: FORMING THE ROSE

This is the most important step.

Step-by-step rolling:

  1. Start from the first chain side (the tighter end)
  2. Roll tightly for the center (this forms the bud)
  3. As you continue:
    • Loosen slightly to form open petals
  4. Adjust layers so petals spread naturally

🌸 PART 6: SECURING THE FLOWER

  1. Thread yarn tail into needle
  2. Stitch through the bottom of the rolled rose:
    • Go back and forth several times
    • Catch all layers
  3. Pull tight and knot securely

🌸 OPTIONAL BASE (recommended)

To make it neat and flat:

  1. Insert needle through bottom layers again
  2. Stitch in a circular motion (like closing a pouch)
  3. This keeps the rose from opening

🌿 OPTIONAL: ADD LEAVES

Quick simple leaf:

  1. Attach green yarn to bottom
  2. Chain 5
  3. Back along chain:
    • sl st, sc, hdc, dc
  4. Sl st back to base

πŸ’‘ PRO TIPS (important!)

βœ” For tight, neat roses:

  • Use smaller hook than recommended
  • Keep tension firm

βœ” For soft, fluffy roses:

  • Use larger hook
  • Looser tension

βœ” If your rose is not curling:

  • You didn’t increase enough β†’ make sure 2 dc in each stitch

βœ” If it curls too tightly:

  • Use fewer stitches or looser tension

🎯 Size Guide

  • 26 chains β†’ small rose
  • 31 chains β†’ medium (like your picture)
  • 36–41 chains β†’ large rose
