How to Crochet This Spike Stitch Pattern

Posted on June 21, 2025

Excellent — thank you for the image! This is a spike stitch pattern (sometimes called a long double crochet spike stitch) often used in baby blankets, scarves, or throws. It creates that beautiful zigzag, arrow-like texture with alternating colors. Let’s go through exactly how to make it:

🧶 How to Crochet This Spike Stitch Pattern

📌 Materials:

  • 3 yarn colors (Color A = white, Color B = pink, Color C = green in your photo)
  • Crochet hook size appropriate for your yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

📋 Pattern Instructions

🌸 Foundation Row

  • With Color A: Chain a multiple of 2 + 1 (for example, 31 chains for practice)

Row 1 (Base Row):

  • Dc (double crochet) into the 4th chain from hook.
  • Dc in each chain across.
  • Turn.

🌸 Row 2 (Plain Double Crochet Row)

  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc)
  • Dc in each stitch across.
  • Turn.

🌸 Row 3 (Spike Stitch Row — Color B)

  • Attach Color B.
  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc)
  • Dc in next st

Now, work a spike dc:

  • Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch 2 rows below (skip the current row and the row before it — work into the base row)
  • Yarn over, pull up a long loop to the height of your working row
  • Yarn over, pull through 2, yarn over, pull through 2 (complete like a normal dc)
  • Dc in next st, spike dc in next

Repeat: one regular dc, one spike dc across row.
End with a dc in top of turning chain.

🌸 Row 4 (Color A)

  • With Color A
  • Ch 3, dc in each st across.

🌸 Row 5 (Spike Stitch Row — Color C)

  • Attach Color C
  • Ch 3
  • Dc in next st
  • Spike dc in next (work into same base row as Color B stitches, 2 rows below current row)
  • Continue 1 dc, 1 spike dc across
  • End with dc in turning chain.

🌸 Repeat Rows 2–5

Alternate your colors and repeat to desired length.

✅ Pro Tips:

  • Keep the spike stitch tension a little loose so the pattern doesn’t pucker.
  • Block your piece lightly after finishing to even out the spike rows.
  • Always count stitches to keep edges straight — spikes and regular dc together should equal the total stitch count per row.
