Easy to make crochet star circle

Posted on October 10, 2025

That’s a beautiful crochet motif — it looks like a Christmas-themed star or flower circle, made using puff stitches and front post stitches for a textured design. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to make it:

🧶 Crochet Star Circle Motif — Detailed Tutorial

🌺 What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: 3 colors (ex: White, Green, Red)
  • Hook: Size 3.0 mm – 4.0 mm
  • Scissors & Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers (optional)

🌼 Step-by-Step Instructions

🌀 Round 1 – Center Circle

Color: White

  1. Make a magic ring.
  2. Chain (ch) 3 (counts as 1 double crochet).
  3. Make 15 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
→ You should have 16 stitches total (including beginning ch-3).
  4. Pull the ring tight.
  5. Join with slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the first ch-3.
  6. Cut yarn and pull through.

✅ Tip: Keep your tension even — this forms the center base for your petals.

🌿 Round 2 – Puff Stitch Petals

Color: Green

  1. Attach yarn in any stitch.
  2. Chain 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch).
  3. Make a puff stitch:
    • Yarn over (yo), insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (3 times total).
    • You’ll have 7 loops on hook.
    • Yarn over, pull through all loops.
    • Chain 1 to close the puff.
  4. Skip 1 dc, puff stitch into the next stitch.
  5. Repeat puff + ch 1, skip 1 dc all the way around.
    → You’ll have 8 puff stitches total.
  6. Join with sl st to the first puff’s closing chain.
  7. Fasten off green.

✅ Tip: Puff stitches create texture. Keep the loops tall and even for a full look.

🌸 Round 3 – Shaping Star Points

Color: Green (continue or reattach)

  1. Slip stitch into the next ch-1 space between two puffs.
  2. Chain 1, then work (1 dc, 1 treble [tr], 1 dc) into that space.
  3. In the next space, repeat (1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc) — this forms each petal tip.
  4. Continue around — 8 pointed petals total.
  5. Join with sl st to the first dc.
  6. Fasten off and weave in ends.

✅ Tip: These stitches make tall petals with a pointed tip — perfect star shape.

⚪ Round 4 – Base Loops for Border

Color: White

  1. Attach yarn to the top of any petal.
  2. Chain 5 (this makes the loop arch).
  3. Slip stitch to the top of the next petal tip.
  4. Repeat (ch 5, sl st to next petal) all around.
    → You’ll have 8 chain loops.
  5. Join with sl st to starting point.

✅ Tip: These loops are the base for your spiral edging next.

🎋 Round 5 – Spiral Color Border

Colors: White + Green

Now you’ll make alternating color double crochets into the chain loops.

  1. Start with white yarn in any loop.
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  3. Make 5 dc in the same loop (total 6 dc).
  4. Before completing the last dc, change to green yarn:
    • When 2 loops are left on hook, drop white, pick up green, and pull through.
  5. In the next loop, make 6 dc using green yarn.
  6. Change back to white the same way at the end of that loop.
  7. Continue alternating colors around the circle.

✅ Tip: Carry unused yarn along the back — don’t cut every time.

  1. Join with sl st to the top of your starting ch-3.
  2. Fasten off and weave in all ends neatly.

🎀 Optional: Outer Edge (if you want it like the red-green one)

  1. Attach red yarn to any stitch.
  2. Work single crochet (sc) evenly all around the edge.
  3. Or, for a decorative look, work reverse single crochet (crab stitch).
  4. Fasten off and weave ends.

✨ Result

You’ll have a layered, 3D star motif with:

  • Puffy inner star
  • Spiral or striped outer ring
  • Perfect for Christmas coasters, wall hangings, or joining into blankets.
