Easy to make crochet rainbow pattern

Posted on November 20, 2025

It looks like the picture shows:

  • A rainbow-striped yarn cake (a yarn ball wound into a flat “cake” shape)
  • A crochet hook
  • Colorful beads used as decoration in the scene

If you want to make the rainbow yarn cake yourself, here’s how you can do it:

🌈✨ HOW TO MAKE A RAINBOW YARN CAKE — FULL DETAILED TUTORIAL

Your picture shows a self-made multicolor yarn cake, created by joining different yarn colors and winding them into a single cake.

Below is the complete process.

🔧 TOOLS & MATERIALS

Required

  • Multiple yarn colors (red, yellow, green, blue, teal)
  • Scissors

Optional but recommended

  • Yarn winder (for perfect cake shape)
  • Yarn swift (if your yarn is in hanks)
  • Yarn needle (for sewing ends)
  • Magic knot technique (for invisible joins)

🧵 PART 1 — Prepare Your Yarn Colors

1. Choose your yarn colors

For the same result as the photo:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Teal / light turquoise

All colors must be same weight (looks like worsted/4-ply in your picture).

2. Measure how long each color should be

This depends on how thick you want each ring in the cake.

For a smooth circular look like your image:

  • Use equal lengths of each color
    or
  • Slightly longer lengths as colors move outward (optional)

Recommended: 20–40 meters per color.

3. Join the yarn colors

This is the key to making a single continuous rainbow yarn.

You can join colors by:

OPTION A — Magic Knot (best)

  • Tie yarn A over yarn B
  • Tie yarn B over yarn A
  • Pull both ends hard
  • The knot becomes very small and strong
  • Trim ends close to the knot

Pros: Tiny, secure, invisible inside the cake.
Cons: Must tie correctly.

OPTION B — Russian Join

Requires a needle.

  • Thread the yarn tail into itself
  • Join the two yarns by interlocking their cores
  • Creates smooth transitions with no knot

Pros: Perfect for crocheters who hate knots.
Cons: Slightly slower.

OPTION C — Simple Knot

If you don’t care about visibility.
(Not recommended if you want a clean yarn cake.)

🎡 PART 2 — Wind Into a Yarn Cake

You can use a yarn winder OR do it by hand.

Let me explain both in detail:

🔁 METHOD 1 — Using a Yarn Winder (Perfect Professional Cake)

1. Insert the starting yarn into the winder’s slot

This creates the center-pull strand.

2. Begin winding slowly

Turn the handle evenly.
You will see the cake shape form automatically.

3. Continue until you reach the first knot/join

When the next color begins…

  • Keep winding
  • Gently pull yarn so knot slides through smoothly
  • Make sure tension stays even

4. Wind until all colors are done

Your cake will show:

  • Red center
  • Followed by blue
  • Followed by teal
  • Green
  • Yellow on the outer edge

Just like in the photo.

5. Remove from the winder

Slide off carefully and keep the center-pull end exposed.

✋ METHOD 2 — Hand-Rolled Yarn Cake (No Winder)

1. Start the core

Wrap the yarn around 2–3 fingers 15–20 times.

2. Fold and compress

Slide off and squish slightly to make a soft bundle.

3. Wrap around the core

Begin wrapping yarn around all sides of the bundle.
Rotate the bundle every few turns so it stays flat.

4. Change colors

When you reach a join:

  • Keep wrapping
  • Make sure color is wrapping smoothly
  • If needed, tuck the knot inside

5. Shape the cake

Press down the top and bottom gently as you wrap to create:

  • Flat top
  • Flat bottom
  • Round sides

6. Continue rotating & shaping

Keep the yarn tension even and don’t pull too tight.

The result will be a beautiful cake almost identical to the machine-wound version.

🌈 RESULT

You now have a rainbow layered yarn cake, perfect for:

  • Crochet
  • Knitting
  • Craft decorations
  • Photography props
  • Selling with your handmade items
