Easy to make Crochet Mason Jar Cover

Posted on January 1, 2026

This is a crocheted mason jar cover (lace-style jar cozy). Here’s a step-by-step tutorial to make it like the image.

MATERIALS (Important)

  • Yarn: Cotton yarn (size 3–4 / DK or worsted)
👉 Cotton is best because it holds shape and doesn’t melt near candles
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (tight look like photo)
👉 Use 4 mm if you crochet tightly
  • Jar: Mason jar or glass jar
  • Scissors, yarn needle

STITCH ABBREVIATIONS (US)

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sk = skip
  • sp = space
  • rep = repeat

PART 1: CROCHET THE BOTTOM CIRCLE

This part must be flat and solid so the jar sits nicely.

Round 1

  1. Make a magic ring
  2. ch 3 (counts as first dc)
  3. Work 11 dc into the ring
  4. Pull ring tight
  5. sl st into top of ch-3

✔ Total: 12 dc

Round 2 (Increase)

  1. ch 3
  2. 1 dc in same stitch
  3. 2 dc in every stitch around
  4. sl st to join

✔ Total: 24 dc

Round 3 (Increase)

  1. ch 3
  2. 2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch
  3. Repeat from * to * around
  4. sl st to join

✔ Total: 36 dc

Check Size (VERY IMPORTANT)

  • Place circle under your jar
  • It should match the jar bottom exactly
  • If still small → add another increase round
  • If bigger → stop here

👉 Most mason jars stop at 36 dc

PART 2: TURN UP THE SIDES

Now we stop increasing and crochet upward.

Round 4 (Base Side Round)

  1. ch 1
  2. 1 sc in BLO (back loop only) of each stitch
  3. sl st to join

✔ This creates a sharp corner so sides stand up

PART 3: LACE / MESH BODY (KEY PART)

This creates the open square pattern seen in the photo.

Round 5 (Start Mesh)

  1. ch 3
  2. sk 1 stitch
  3. 1 dc in next stitch
  4. ch 1
  5. Repeat steps 2–4 around
  6. sl st to join

✔ Pattern: dc, ch-1 gaps

Round 6

  1. ch 3
  2. 1 dc in next dc
  3. ch 1
  4. Repeat around
  5. sl st to join

👉 Always place dc on top of dc

Rounds 7–11 (Height)

Repeat Round 6

  • Try on jar after each round
  • Stop just below the lid threads

✔ Usually 5–7 mesh rounds total

PART 4: TIGHTEN THE TOP

This prevents slipping and gives a neat finish.

Next Round (Closing Mesh)

  1. ch 1
  2. 1 sc in dc, 1 sc in ch-1 space
  3. Repeat around
  4. sl st to join

Final Round (Optional – Neat Edge)

  1. ch 1
  2. sc in every stitch
  3. sl st
  4. Fasten off

PART 5: FINISHING

  • Cut yarn
  • Pull through and tighten
  • Weave in ends inside the cover
  • Stretch gently over the jar

OPTIONAL DECOR IDEAS

  • Add a crochet flower
  • Attach wood button
  • Crochet a picot edge
  • Thread a jute string through mesh

TROUBLESHOOTING

❌ Too loose → use smaller hook
❌ Too tight → go up hook size
❌ Slips off → add one more sc round
❌ Gaps uneven → count stitches each round
