Easy to make crochet keychain flower

Posted on October 19, 2025

That’s a beautiful Christmas crochet keychain — shaped like a star flower with layers of green, white, and yellow yarn (and sometimes red). Here’s a detailed tutorial on how to make it step-by-step:

🎁 Materials

ItemDetails
Yarn4 colors: yellow, white, green, red (DK or 3-ply cotton or acrylic)
Hook2.5 mm or 3.0 mm crochet hook
ToolsYarn needle, scissors
AccessoryMetal keychain ring (gold or silver), optional jump ring
OptionalHot glue for extra security

🧶 Step 1: Crochet the Yellow Center

1. Make a magic ring
→ Wrap yarn around your fingers and insert hook under the loop.

2. Chain 1 (counts as first stitch base).
3. Work 6 single crochets (sc) into the ring.
4. Pull the tail to close the ring tightly.
5. Slip stitch (sl st) into the first sc to join.
You should have a small flat yellow circle.

✂️ Cut yarn and fasten off.

🌼 Step 2: Make the White Inner Petals

1. Attach white yarn to any yellow stitch.
2. Chain 2.
In the same stitch, work:
→ 2 double crochets (dc),
→ chain 2,
→ slip stitch in the same stitch.
That forms one petal.

3. Move to the next yellow stitch and repeat:
→ (sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st) in each yellow stitch around.

✅ You’ll have 6 small white petals forming a daisy-like flower.

✂️ Cut yarn and weave in ends.

🍃 Step 3: Crochet the Outer Layer (Green or Red)

We’ll work behind the white flower — through the yellow base stitches or the space between white petals.

1. Attach green (or red) yarn in any space between two white petals.

2. Chain 3 (acts as first dc).
In the same space:
→ 1 double crochet (dc),
→ 1 treble crochet (tr),
→ chain 2,
→ 1 tr,
→ 1 dc,
→ chain 3,
→ sl st in the same space.

This makes one large pointed petal.

3. Move to next space between white petals and repeat.
You’ll make 6 large petals total.

✅ Each large petal sits behind and between the small white ones, creating a star-flower shape.

✂️ Fasten off and weave in ends neatly.

🌟 Step 4: Finishing the Edges (Optional)

If you want a more defined outline:

  • Use red yarn and single crochet around each petal edge (both green and white parts).
  • Slip stitch at petal tips to keep shape.
  • This adds a festive border and strengthens the keychain.

🔗 Step 5: Turn Into Keychain

  1. Take a metal keyring and a short chain link or jump ring.
  2. Attach it to one petal tip (you can sew it through the stitch or loop through a chain space).
  3. Use the yarn tail to tie securely or apply a bit of hot glue to keep it in place.
  4. Trim any excess yarn neatly.

🎄 Step 6: Decoration & Variations

  • Alternating colors: red outer petals + green outer petals (like in your photo).
  • Center embellishment: Sew a tiny bead or pearl in the yellow center.
  • Tree ornament version: skip the ring, attach a hanging loop with yarn.
  • Double-layer version: make two flowers and stitch them back-to-back for a puffy look.
