Easy to make Crochet Granny Square

Posted on December 27, 2025

This is a two-color tapestry crochet square (also called mosaic / pixel crochet) made with single crochet stitches, changing colors to form the pattern. I’ll explain it step by step in a simple way so you can follow even without a chart.

TWO-COLOR TAPESTRY CROCHET SQUARE

(Like the picture)

1️⃣ Materials (Important)

  • Yarn Color A (teal/green – main color)
  • Yarn Color B (yellow – design color)
  • Crochet hook 3.5–4 mm
  • Stitch marker (optional)
  • Scissors

👉 Use smooth yarn (cotton or acrylic) so the pattern looks clean.

2️⃣ Crochet Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • yo = yarn over
  • st = stitch
  • turn = turn your work

3️⃣ Very Important Rules (Read First)

✔ Use single crochet ONLY
✔ Always carry the unused yarn inside the stitches
✔ Change color on the last yarn over of the stitch
✔ Count stitches every row (very important)

4️⃣ How to Change Color (Step-by-Step)

  1. Insert hook into stitch
  2. Yo with old color, pull up loop (2 loops on hook)
  3. Drop old color
  4. Yo with new color
  5. Pull through both loops → color changed

👉 Always keep both yarns behind your work

5️⃣ Start the Square (Foundation)

Row 1 (Base row)

  • With Color A
  • Chain 26
  • Sc in 2nd chain from hook
  • Sc in each chain across
  • Total = 25 sc
  • Ch 1, turn

6️⃣ Pattern Breakdown (Yellow Blocks)

Each yellow shape is made from:

  • 1 sc
