Amazing Crochet Stitch

Posted on December 4, 2025

Here is a step-by-step tutorial for making the crochet basket shown in the picture. This project uses a jar lid as a base and creates a beautiful two-color mosaic-style stitch for the sides.

🧢 FULL DETAILED TUTORIAL β€” Crochet Basket With Jar Lid Base

πŸ”Έ PART 1 β€” MAKING THE BASE

MATERIAL FOR THIS PART

  • Jar lid
  • Yarn (Color A)
  • Crochet hook

Step 1 β€” Prepare the lid

Choose a lid with a flat surface.
You will wrap yarn around the edge of the lid (not the top).

Step 2 β€” Attach yarn to lid rim

  1. Hold the lid in your left hand.
  2. Insert hook under the lid rim from back to front.
  3. Grab the yarn with the hook.
  4. Pull it under the rim.
  5. Chain 1 to secure.

Step 3 β€” Wrap the yarn around the lid (the fan shape)

This is the most important part!

  1. Insert the hook under the rim again.
  2. Grab the yarn.
  3. Pull it under the rim but do not crochet β€” just let it loop over the rim.
  4. Continue making these wraps side by side, tightly packed.
  5. Do this around half the lid, as seen in the left image.

πŸ‘‰ These wraps replace normal stitches and create a flat base for the basket.

Step 4 β€” Secure the wraps

After filling the rim:

  1. Insert hook into the top loops of the wraps.
  2. Work single crochet (sc) across the entire wrapped edge.
  3. This forms a clean row of stitches to start the basket.

Now your base is complete.

πŸ”Έ PART 2 β€” CROCHETING THE SIDES (THE 3-COLOR PATTERN)

You will use three colors, but the pattern works with two as well.

  • Color A = Orange
  • Color B = Grey
  • Color C = White

⭐ SPECIAL STITCH USED

Spike stitch / Long stitch

  • Insert hook into a stitch one row lower (or into the wrapped base).
  • Pull yarn up to the current row height.
  • Finish like a normal single crochet.

This creates the long vertical stitches you see.

πŸ”Έ Step 1 β€” First round on the lid

Using Color A:

  1. Make 1 sc in each stitch around the base edge.
  2. Join with slip stitch.
  3. Chain 1.

This stabilizes the form.

πŸ”Έ Step 2 β€” Start the color pattern

You will repeat these 3 rounds over and over.

🟧 ROUND 1 β€” WITH COLOR A (ORANGE)

  • Work single crochet (sc) in every stitch.
  • Insert hook normally.

This round builds the base for the next spike stitches.

🟫 ROUND 2 β€” WITH COLOR B (GREY)

Repeat:

  1. 1 single crochet (sc) in next stitch
  2. 1 spike stitch:
    • Insert hook into the round below
    • Pull yarn up
    • Complete single crochet

Alternate them around:

➑ sc, spike, sc, spike, sc, spike …

This forms the diagonal pattern base.

βšͺ ROUND 3 β€” WITH COLOR C (WHITE)

Same pattern as Round 2:

➑ sc, spike, sc, spike, sc, spike …

But because you’re on a different row, the spike stitches align in a way that creates the woven honeycomb texture you see in the photo.

πŸ” REPEAT THE 3 ROUNDS

Keep repeating:

  1. Color A β€” full round of sc
  2. Color B β€” sc + spike
  3. Color C β€” sc + spike

You will see the beautiful 3-color brick texture growing upward.

πŸ”Έ PART 3 β€” FINISHING

Final round

Use Color A (orange):

  • Make tight slip stitches or single crochet all around the edge.
  • This gives a clean border.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

🧺 Finished Result

You now have a cute crochet basket with:
βœ” A strong lid base
βœ” A beautiful woven mosaic texture
βœ” Clean edges
