Amazing Crochet Granny Square

Posted on December 27, 2025

This is a two-color crochet square motif that looks like a checker / optical illusion block. I’ll explain it step by step, beginner-friendly, and based on what’s visible in the image.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn Color A (purple)
  • Yarn Color B (cream/white)
  • Hook 3.5–4 mm
  • Scissors
  • Needle

👉 Use smooth yarn, not fluffy.

STITCH GUIDE (US TERMS)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space

STEP-BY-STEP PATTERN

🔸 ROUND 1 – CENTER FLOWER (Color B)

  1. Make a magic ring
  2. Ch 2 (counts as first dc)
  3. Work 11 dc into the ring
    👉 Total = 12 dc
  4. Pull ring tight
  5. Sl st into top of first dc
  6. Fasten off

✔ You should see a small round flower

🔸 ROUND 2 – TURN CIRCLE INTO SQUARE (Color A)

  1. Join Color A in any dc
  2. Ch 3 (counts as dc)
  3. Dc 2 more in same stitch
    👉 This makes a 3-dc group

Corners

  1. Skip 2 stitches
  2. In next stitch:
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc ← corner made
  3. Skip 2 stitches
  4. In next stitch: 3 dc
  5. Repeat steps 4–7 until you have 4 corners
  6. Sl st to join

✔ Now you have a small square

🔸 ROUND 3 – CREAM BLOCKS (Color B)

This round makes the raised white shapes.

  1. Join Color B in a corner ch-2 space
  2. Ch 3, dc 2, ch 2, dc 3 (corner)

Side blocks

  1. In next space between dc groups: 3 dc
  2. Skip the next space
  3. In next space: 3 dc

Next corner

  1. In corner ch-2 space:
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  2. Repeat around
  3. Sl st to join

✔ You will see cream rectangles forming

🔸 ROUND 4 – PURPLE FRAME (Color A)

This round shapes the illusion.

  1. Join Color A in any corner
  2. Ch 3, dc 2, ch 2, dc 3

Along sides

  1. Dc 1 stitch into each dc
  2. Skip chain spaces (don’t crochet into them)

Corners

  1. Always do: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  2. Repeat all around
  3. Sl st to join

✔ Purple outlines the cream blocks

🔸 ROUND 5 – FINAL SHAPE (Color A)

  1. Ch 3
  2. Dc in every stitch
  3. Corners stay the same:
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  4. Sl st to join
  5. Fasten off

✔ Square is complete
