How to make crochet puff flowers

Posted on May 19, 2025

Hereโ€™s a step-by-step guide to making Crochet Puff Flowers (3D puff or popcorn-style flowers) like those in my photo. Theyโ€™re beginner-friendly and perfect for turning into blankets, scarves, or table decor.

๐ŸŒธ Detailed Pattern: 3D Crochet Puff Flower

๐Ÿงถ Materials:

  • Yarn: Worsted or DK weight (cotton or acrylic recommended)
  • Hook: 3.0mm โ€“ 4.5mm (check yarn label)
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Scissors

๐Ÿ”ค Abbreviations (U.S. Terms):

  • MR โ€“ Magic Ring
  • ch โ€“ chain
  • sl st โ€“ slip stitch
  • dc โ€“ double crochet
  • yo โ€“ yarn over
  • st โ€“ stitch

๐Ÿชก Instructions

๐ŸŒผ Round 1: Center of the Flower

  1. Start with a Magic Ring (or chain 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring).
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
  3. Make 11 more dc into the ring. You should now have 12 dc total.
  4. Join with a sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3.
  5. Fasten off if changing color for petals (optional).

๐ŸŒธ Round 2: Puff Petals

Switch to petal color and attach yarn in any dc of Round 1.

Each petal is made using the puff stitch technique:

Petal Stitch (worked into one stitch):

  1. Ch 2 to start.
  2. Yo, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull up a loop โ€” repeat this 4 times in the same stitch. (Youโ€™ll now have 9 loops on the hook.)
  3. Yo and pull through all 9 loops.
  4. Ch 1 to close the puff (this is essential to keep it from unraveling).

Repeat this puff stitch in each of the 12 dc from Round 1 to make 12 petals.

  1. Sl st into the base of the first puff to join the round.
  2. Fasten off and weave in ends.

๐Ÿ”— Joining the Flowers

There are two common ways to join these puff flowers:

1. Sewing Together:

  • Use a yarn needle and stitch petals together where they touch.
  • Ideal for structured layouts like blankets or mats.

2. Join-as-you-go (JAYGO):

  • As you crochet the last puff of a petal, slip stitch into a neighboring flower’s petal to join.
  • This gives a seamless, connected look.

๐Ÿ“ Adjustments & Tips

  • You can make larger flowers by doing puff stitches with more yarn-overs (5 instead of 4).
  • To make the flower flatter or more open, increase the ch-2 at the beginning to ch-3 or ch-4.
  • Add a round of single crochet around each flower if you want a cleaner edge for sewing.

๐Ÿงบ Project Ideas:

  • Blankets / Throws
  • Table runners
  • Pillow covers
  • Bags and totes
  • Wall hangings
  • Rugs (use chunky yarn)
