Step-by-step to make Crochet Square

Posted on February 6, 2026

It’s a 3D layered crochet square made from one base granny square + 4 rolled circle flowers sewn on top. I’ll break it down step by step, beginner-friendly but detailed 💛🧶

FULL DETAILED TUTORIAL

3D ROLLED FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE

MATERIAL DETAILS

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted
  • Hook: 3.0 mm (tight stitches give better shape)
  • Colors:
    • A – Gray
    • B – White
    • C – Orange

👉 Use the same hook size for everything

PART 1: CENTER CIRCLE (ORANGE)

Round 1

  1. Make magic ring
  2. Chain 2 (counts as first dc)
  3. Crochet 11 dc into ring
  4. Pull ring tight
  5. Slip stitch into top of chain 2

✅ Total: 12 dc

Why dc?
→ Gives a flat, solid center and smooth color rings.

PART 2: WHITE RING

Round 2 (White)

  1. Join white yarn in any stitch
  2. Chain 2
  3. 2 dc in each stitch around
  4. Slip stitch to join

✅ Total: 24 dc

👉 This creates a perfect circle that won’t curl.

PART 3: CHANGE CIRCLE INTO A SQUARE (GRAY)

This is the MOST IMPORTANT step.

Round 3 (Gray)

  1. Join gray yarn
  2. Chain 2

First corner

  • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same stitch

Side stitches

  • 1 dc in next 5 stitches

Repeat:

  • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) → corner
  • dc in next 5 stitches

Do this 4 times total

Slip stitch to join.

✅ You now have a circle inside a square

PART 4: WHITE SQUARE FRAME

Round 4 (White)

  1. Join white yarn in a corner
  2. Chain 2

In corners:

  • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)

Along sides:

  • 1 dc in each stitch

Slip stitch to join.

Why this round?
→ Separates colors cleanly and prepares for the diamond design.

PART 5: ORANGE DIAMOND SHAPE

This round only works on the middle of each side.

Round 5 (Orange)

  1. Join orange yarn at center stitch of a side
  2. Chain 2
  3. Dc in next 3 stitches
  4. Skip corners completely
  5. Repeat on all 4 sides
  6. Slip stitch to join

✨ This creates the bold orange diamond/chevron look

PART 6: FINAL GRAY BORDER

Round 6 (Gray)

  1. Join gray yarn in any stitch
  2. Chain 1
  3. Single crochet in every stitch
  4. In each corner: 2 sc

Fasten off.

✅ Base square is complete.

PART 7: ROLLED FLOWERS (MAKE 4)

These are flat spirals, then rolled.

Flower – Round 1 (Gray)

  1. Magic ring
  2. 8 sc into ring
  3. Do NOT join (continuous round)

Round 2 (White)

  • 2 sc in each stitch
    ✅ Total: 16 sc

Round 3 (Orange – creates curl)

  • (dc, ch 1, dc) in each stitch
  • Fasten off with long tail

Why this curls:
→ Too many stitches force the piece to spiral naturally.

PART 8: ROLLING THE FLOWER 🌸

  1. Start rolling from gray center
  2. Roll tightly at first
  3. Loosen slightly as you go outward
  4. Use yarn tail to stitch underneath:
    • Stitch through layers
    • Pull tight
    • Knot securely

Repeat 4 times

PART 9: ATTACH FLOWERS TO SQUARE

  1. Place one flower on each corner
  2. Sew only through the gray base stitches
  3. Do NOT flatten the spiral
  4. Secure firmly

FINAL RESULT 🎉

✔ Raised 3D flowers
✔ Strong square base
✔ Clean color contrast
✔ Perfect for:

  • Pillow covers
  • Wall art
  • Bags
  • Table mats
