Amazing Crochet Granny Square

Posted on February 1, 2026

this is a crochet granny square blanket πŸ’– β€” classic, cozy, and very doable. I’ll break it down step by step so you can make the same style.

From the photo, it’s:

Finished with a simple border

Solid granny squares

Joined into a check / grid layout

🧢 WHAT THIS BLANKET IS

  • Solid granny square blanket
  • Squares are mostly dark gray
  • Pink lines appear between squares (join color)
  • Light beige softens the pattern
  • Squares are flat (no gaps)

πŸ“¦ MATERIALS (IMPORTANT)

  • Yarn weight: Medium / 4
  • Hook: 5.0 mm
  • Colors:
    • A: Dark gray (main color)
    • B: Light beige
    • C: Pink (joining lines)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

🟦 STEP 1: HOW TO MAKE ONE SOLID GRANNY SQUARE

We’ll make a solid square (no holes).

πŸ”Ή ROUND 1 – Center

  1. Make a magic ring
  2. Chain 3 (this counts as 1 double crochet)
  3. Crochet 2 double crochet into the ring
β†’ now you have 3 dc
  4. Chain 2 (corner)
  5. Crochet 3 dc
  6. Chain 2
  7. Crochet 3 dc
  8. Chain 2
  9. Crochet 3 dc
  10. Chain 2
  11. Slip stitch into top of chain-3

βœ… You now have 4 corners

πŸ”Ή ROUND 2

  1. Slip stitch into the corner space
  2. Chain 3
  3. 1 dc
  4. 1 dc
    β†’ 3 dc
  5. Chain 2
  6. 3 dc in same corner (corner made)
  7. Crochet 1 dc into each dc from previous round (3 dc)
  8. In next corner:
    • 3 dc
    • ch 2
    • 3 dc
  9. Repeat around
  10. Slip stitch to join

πŸ”Ή ROUND 3

  1. Slip stitch to corner
  2. Ch 3, 2 dc
  3. Ch 2
  4. 3 dc (corner)
  5. Dc in every stitch along the side
  6. In each corner: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  7. Join with slip stitch

πŸ”Ή ROUND 4 & 5 (Same as Round 3)

  • Double crochet in every stitch
  • Corners always:
    3 dc – ch 2 – 3 dc

πŸ’‘ Stop when square is 15–18 cm (6–7 inches)

πŸŸͺ STEP 2: COLOR CHANGE (IMPORTANT)

To change color cleanly:

  1. Finish last dc until 2 loops remain
  2. Yarn over with new color
  3. Pull through both loops
  4. Continue crocheting

➑️ In the photo:

  • Most rounds = dark gray
  • Final round = pink OR beige

🧩 STEP 3: JOINING SQUARES (THIS MAKES THE GRID)

BEST METHOD: JOIN-AS-YOU-GO

When making the LAST ROUND of a square:

  1. Crochet until corner
  2. Instead of ch 2:
    • Slip stitch into corner of neighboring square
    • Ch 1
    • Slip stitch again
  3. Continue 3 dc

This creates:

  • Flat joins
  • Clear pink grid lines

EASIER METHOD (Still beautiful)

  1. Make all squares
  2. Sew together using mattress stitch
  3. Attach pink yarn
  4. Surface slip stitch over seams

🟫 STEP 4: BORDER (VERY DETAILED)

Border Round 1

  • Attach dark gray
  • Single crochet evenly
  • In corners: 3 sc

Border Round 2

  • Chain 3
  • Dc around
  • 3 dc in corners

Optional Border Round 3 (Pretty)

  • Skip 2 stitches
  • 5 dc in next stitch (shell)
  • Skip 2 stitches
  • Sl st
  • Repeat

πŸ“ HOW MANY SQUARES YOU NEED

Blanket SizeSquares
Baby6 Γ— 6 = 36
Throw8 Γ— 8 = 64

πŸ’‘ PRO TIPS
