How to make Crochet Motif

Posted on January 1, 2026

This is a crochet linked loop / infinity motif trim (often used as table runners, borders, or straps). I’ll explain it step by step so you can make the same design 🌸
(English crochet terms)

🧢 MATERIALS (IMPORTANT)

  • Yarn: Cotton or milk cotton (not fuzzy)
  • Yarn weight: Sport / DK
  • Hook size: 3.0 mm – 3.5 mm
  • Scissors
  • Needle

πŸ‘‰ Tight stitches = nicer shape like the photo

✨ STITCHES USED

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (decrease)

🟀 PART 1: MAKE THE FIRST LOOP (OVAL)

Step 1: Make a ring

  1. Chain 14
  2. Insert hook into first chain
  3. Slip stitch to make a ring

πŸ‘‰ Do NOT twist the chain

Step 2: Fill the loop

  1. Chain 1 (does NOT count as stitch)
  2. Single crochet 24 stitches evenly around the ring
(Put stitches into the hole, not the chain)
  3. Slip stitch into first SC

βœ… You now have 1 thick oval loop

πŸ”Ί PART 2: MAKE THE TRIANGLE (INSIDE THE LOOP)

We will crochet back and forth, not in rounds.

Row 1:

  1. Attach yarn on one side of the loop
  2. Chain 1
  3. Single crochet 12 stitches across HALF of the loop
  4. Turn your work

Row 2:

  1. Chain 1
  2. sc2tog (decrease)
  3. Single crochet in each stitch until last 2
  4. sc2tog
  5. Turn

πŸ‘‰ You reduced 2 stitches

Row 3:

  1. Chain 1
  2. sc2tog
  3. SC across
  4. sc2tog
  5. Turn

Continue rows:

Repeat Row 3 until:

  • Only 1 stitch remains

Finish triangle:

  1. Chain 1
  2. Cut yarn
  3. Pull tight

βœ… You now have 1 loop + 1 triangle

πŸ”— PART 3: MAKE THE SECOND LOOP (LINKED)

This is the most important part πŸ‘€

Step 1: Start new loop

  1. Chain 14
  2. Insert hook through the POINT of the triangle
  3. Slip stitch into first chain to close loop

πŸ‘‰ This links the pieces together

Step 2: Fill loop

  1. Chain 1
  2. Single crochet 24 stitches around loop
  3. Slip stitch to first SC

πŸ”Ί PART 4: MAKE NEXT TRIANGLE

Repeat PART 2 on this new loop

πŸ” REPEAT PATTERN

Repeat:

  • Loop β†’ Triangle β†’ Loop β†’ Triangle

Until your desired length

🧡 FINISHING

  • Weave in all yarn ends
  • Lightly stretch with hands
  • Optional: steam block (do not touch iron)

🌸 SIZE ADJUSTMENTS

βœ” Bigger loops β†’ chain 16–18
βœ” Smaller loops β†’ chain 12
βœ” Wider triangle β†’ start with 14 SC instead of 12

πŸ’‘ COMMON MISTAKES

❌ Triangle too loose β†’ use smaller hook
❌ Loop twisting β†’ check chain before slip stitch
❌ Uneven edges β†’ always chain 1 before turning
