Amazing Crochet Sunflower Granny Square

This is a crochet sunflower granny square 🌻. I’ll explain it step by step, from the center to the square, in an easy way.

🧢 MATERIALS

  • Medium yarn (4 ply / worsted)
    • Brown – center
    • Yellow – petals
    • Green – leaves
    • Cream – square
  • Hook: 4.5 mm – 5 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

πŸ“Œ STITCH GUIDE (US TERMS)

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet

🌻 ROUND 1 – CENTER (BROWN)

  1. Make a magic ring
  2. Ch 1 (does NOT count as stitch)
  3. Put 12 sc into the ring
  4. Pull the ring tight
  5. Sl st into the first sc
  6. Cut yarn, pull through

βœ” You should have 12 tight stitches in a circle


🌻 ROUND 2 – PETAL BASE (YELLOW)

  1. Join yellow yarn in any stitch
  2. Ch 2
  3. In SAME stitch:
    • 2 dc
    • ch 2
  4. Sl st in the next stitch
    πŸ‘‰ This makes one small petal base
  5. Repeat around:
    • (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st in next stitch)

You will have 12 petal bases

  1. Sl st to close
  2. Cut yarn

🌻 ROUND 3 – LONG PETALS (YELLOW)

  1. Join yellow yarn in any ch-2 space
  2. Ch 3
  3. In same space:
    • 3 tr
    • ch 3
  4. Sl st in same space

πŸ‘‰ One big petal is done

  1. Sl st into next ch-2 space
  2. Repeat around all petals
  3. Sl st to finish
  4. Cut yarn

βœ” Now your sunflower shape is visible 🌻


πŸƒ ROUND 4 – LEAVES (GREEN)

  1. Join green yarn between two petals
  2. In the space:
    • sc
    • hdc
    • dc
    • hdc
    • sc

πŸ‘‰ This makes one leaf

  1. Move to next space between petals
  2. Repeat around
  3. Sl st to close
  4. Cut yarn

βœ” You should see green leaves around the flower


⬜ ROUND 5 – MAKING THE SQUARE (CREAM)

  1. Join cream yarn in any space
  2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)

Corner stitch:

  • 2 dc
  • ch 2
  • 3 dc

Side stitch:

  • 3 dc in next space
  1. Repeat around:
    • Corners: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)
    • Sides: (3 dc)
  2. Sl st into top of ch-3

βœ” Now it looks like a square


⬜ ROUND 6 – FINAL BORDER (CREAM)

  1. Ch 3
  2. Dc in every stitch
  3. In each corner:
    • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
  4. Sl st to close
  5. Cut yarn and weave in ends

βœ… FINISHED SIZE

Approx. 12–14 cm (5–6 inches)
(depends on yarn and hook)


πŸ’‘ TIPS

  • Use looser tension for petals
  • Block lightly to make square neat
  • For bigger square β†’ add more border rounds
