Step-by-step to make Crochet Pattern

Posted on December 28, 2025

Sure 😊 I’ll explain it step by step, so you can follow even if you’re a beginner.

This stitch is called Waffle / Basket Weave Crochet Stitch, made using Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) and Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc).

🧢 WHAT YOU NEED

  • Medium yarn (cotton or acrylic is good)
  • Crochet hook 4–5 mm
  • Scissors

🧡 CROCHET TERMS (US)

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • BPdc = back post double crochet
  • st = stitch

πŸ”— STEP 1: MAKE THE FOUNDATION CHAIN

  1. Make a slip knot
  2. Chain a number that is multiple of 4 + 2

Example (easy size):

Chain 26

🧱 STEP 2: ROW 1 (BASE ROW)

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook into the 3rd chain from the hook
  3. Make 1 dc
  4. Make 1 dc in every chain until the end
  5. Turn your work

πŸ‘‰ This row creates a normal dc base.

🧩 STEP 3: ROW 2 (FIRST TEXTURE ROW)

  1. Chain 2 (this counts as first dc)
  2. FPdc in next 2 stitches
  3. BPdc in next 2 stitches
  4. Repeat:
FPdc 2, BPdc 2

until the end
5. Turn

🧩 STEP 4: ROW 3 (SWITCH POSTS)

  1. Chain 2
  2. BPdc in next 2 stitches
  3. FPdc in next 2 stitches
  4. Repeat:
BPdc 2, FPdc 2

until the end
5. Turn

πŸ‘‰ This switch is what makes the basket / waffle look

πŸ” STEP 5: REPEAT PATTERN

Repeat:

  • Row 2
  • Row 3

Over and over until your piece is the size you want.

πŸͺ’ HOW TO MAKE EACH STITCH (VERY IMPORTANT)

βœ… FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET (FPdc)

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook from front β†’ behind the stitch β†’ back to front
  3. Yarn over, pull up loop
  4. Finish like a normal dc

πŸ“Œ The stitch pops forward

βœ… BACK POST DOUBLE CROCHET (BPdc)

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert hook from back β†’ in front of stitch β†’ back again
  3. Yarn over, pull up loop
  4. Finish like a normal dc

πŸ“Œ The stitch sinks back

🧑 IMPORTANT TIPS
