Posted on December 20, 2025

This is a crochet spiral pinwheel flower / peppermint-style motif made from separate curved petals, then joined in the center. Here’s a clear step-by-step tutorial you can follow 🧢

CROCHET SPIRAL PINWHEEL FLOWER – FULL DETAILS

Finished Size

  • About 8–9 cm (3–3.5 inches) wide
  • Thickness comes from layered petals

MATERIALS (IMPORTANT)

  • Yarn: Milk cotton / DK / light worsted
  • Colors: Red, White, Green
  • Hook: 3.0 mm (use 2.5 mm for tighter stitches)
  • Needle, scissors

CROCHET TERMS (US)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only

PART 1: HOW TO CROCHET ONE PETAL (VERY DETAILED)

πŸ‘‰ You will make 8 identical petals
πŸ‘‰ Change color every petal (R–W–G–R–W–G…)

STEP 1: FOUNDATION CHAIN

  1. Make a slip knot
  2. Chain 13

You now have:

13 chains

STEP 2: ROW 1 – BASIC SHAPE

Work into the chains starting from 2nd chain from hook

ChainStitch

next 3dc
next 3hdc
next 2sc

πŸ‘‰ Total stitches: 10

  • Chain 1
  • Turn work

Your petal should already look slightly leaf-shaped 🌿

STEP 3: ROW 2 – MAKING THE CURVE (VERY IMPORTANT)

⚠ Work BACK LOOP ONLY (BLO) for this row

  1. sc in first stitch
  2. hdc in next stitch
  3. 2 dc in each of next 3 stitches
  4. hdc in next stitch
  5. sc in last stitch

This increase makes the petal curve naturally

  • Chain 1
  • Turn

STEP 4: ROW 3 – SMOOTH EDGE

  1. sc in every stitch across
  2. Do NOT increase
  3. Fasten off
  4. Leave a long tail (for sewing)

βœ… One curved petal is complete

PART 2: MAKE ALL PETALS

Total Petals:

  • 8 petals = same fullness as image

Color Order (recommended):

  1. Red
  2. White
  3. Green
  4. Red
  5. White
  6. Green
  7. Red
  8. White

(You can repeat colors however you like)

PART 3: ASSEMBLING THE SPIRAL (MOST IMPORTANT PART)

STEP 1: ARRANGEMENT

  1. Place petals face up
  2. Overlap them in one direction only (clockwise)
  3. Narrow ends meet at center
  4. Each petal overlaps the next by about 1 cm

It should look like a swirling fan

STEP 2: SEW THE CENTER

  1. Thread needle with one petal tail
  2. Insert needle through all petal bases
  3. Pull tightly to create swirl
  4. Stitch around center 2–3 times
  5. Secure with strong knot on back

⚠ Pull tight, but not so tight that petals wrinkle

PART 4: OPTIONAL CENTER CIRCLE (NEATER FINISH)

  1. Attach yarn at center
  2. Chain 1
  3. Crochet 6–8 sc around the center hole
  4. Slip stitch
  5. Fasten off

PART 5: FINISHING

  • Weave in all ends
  • Gently shape petals with fingers
  • Steam lightly (optional)

COMMON PROBLEMS & FIXES

❌ Petals too flat
βœ” Use more dc increases

❌ Flower not swirling
βœ” Overlap petals same direction

❌ Center hole too big
βœ” Sew tighter or add center sc round
