How to make Crochet Granny Square

Posted on November 20, 2025

Here is a step-by-step tutorial to make the crochet square pattern you showed.
This design uses tapestry crochet / mosaic crochet style with color-changes to create the white diamond motif on a purple background.

🧶 DETAILED STEP-BY-STEP PATTERN

Stitches used

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet (only for finishing optional)
  • ( … ) = repeat inside parentheses

⭐ ROUND 1 – Center Flower (WHITE / B)

  1. Magic ring
  2. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc)
  3. Make 11 dc into ring → 12 dc total
  4. Pull tight, sl st to join

⭐ ROUND 2 – Expand White Center

Still White (B):

  1. Ch 3
  2. (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st) repeat around
    → total 18 dc
  3. Sl st

This creates the small 6-sided white center you see.

⭐ ROUND 3 – Switch to Purple

Start Purple (A):

  1. Attach yarn A
  2. Ch 3
  3. dc in each stitch around → 18 dc
  4. Sl st

⭐ ROUND 4 – Begin Diamond Colorwork

This round begins the motif.
Repeat for each side:

Pattern for 1 side:

  • 5 Purple dc
  • Change to White: 3 White dc
  • Change back to Purple

Full round:

  1. Ch 3 (Purple)
  2. (Purple 5 dc, White 3 dc) × 4
  3. Sl st with purple

You will see the diamond starting to grow.

⭐ ROUND 5 – Grow Diamond

White sections get bigger.

Pattern for 1 side:

  • Purple 4
  • White 5
  • Purple 4

Full round:

  1. Ch 3
  2. (A 4 dc, B 5 dc, A 4 dc) × 4
  3. Sl st with Purple

Now the diamond looks sharp and points outward.

⭐ ROUND 6 – Begin Squaring the Shape

Continue tapestry style:

Pattern for 1 side:

  • Purple 3
  • White 7
  • Purple 3

Then add 1 corner:

  • (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next Purple stitch

Repeat all 4 sides.

Full round:

  1. Ch 3
  2. (A 3 dc, B 7 dc, A 3 dc, [A dc, ch 2, A dc]) × 4
  3. Sl st

Now it starts turning into a square.

⭐ ROUND 7 – Square Expansion + Small White Sprinkles

White motif shrinks inward now.

Pattern for 1 side:

  • Purple 5
  • White 3
  • Purple 5

Add corners:

  • (dc, ch 2, dc)

Full round:

  1. Ch 3
  2. (A 5 dc, B 3 dc, A 5 dc, [A dc, ch 2, A dc]) × 4
  3. Sl st

You now get the small white side decorations.

⭐ ROUND 8 – Last Colorwork

Final white sprinkles as in picture.

Pattern per side:

  • Purple 6
  • White 1
  • Purple 7
  • White 1
  • Purple 6

Corner:

  • (dc, ch 2, dc)

Full round:

  1. Ch 3
  2. (A 6 dc, B 1 dc, A 7 dc, B 1 dc, A 6 dc, [A dc, ch 2, A dc]) × 4
  3. Sl st

These single white stitches replicate the tiny white accents.

⭐ ROUND 9 – Final Purple Round

All purple:

  1. Ch 3
  2. dc in every stitch
  3. (dc, ch 2, dc) in each corner
  4. Sl st

This cleans the edges and makes the square neat.

⭐ OPTIONAL ROUND 10 – Border (Purple)

You may add:

  • 1 round single crochet around the square
  • sc, ch 1, sc in each corner

This helps with blocking and sewing.

🌟 Finished!

You now have the exact square motif from the picture.
Colorwork creates the central white diamond and the scattered small white patterns on the outside.
