Amazing Crochet Tunisian

Posted on November 20, 2025

This stitch in your image is a 3-color Tunisian smock / honeycomb–style stitch (sometimes called Tunisian knit stitch with color changes).
It looks woven because each row is worked with a different color, and all stitches are done in Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS).

Below is a clear, step-by-step tutorial you can follow.

🧶 MATERIALS

  • 3 colors of yarn
    • Color A = Orange
    • Color B = Gray
    • Color C = White
  • Tunisian crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

📌 BEFORE STARTING:

✦ Understanding the stitch

The look comes from:

  • Using Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) every row
  • Changing colors each row
  • Keeping a consistent tension so loops remain tall

TKS = Insert hook between the front and back vertical bars (like entering a knit stitch).

🔶 STEP 1 — Foundation Chain

  1. With Color A, chain an even number (e.g., 20).
  2. Add +1 chain for the edge (21 total).

🔶 STEP 2 — Foundation Row (Forward Pass)

  1. Insert hook into back bump of the 2nd chain from hook.
  2. Yarn over, pull up a loop.
  3. Repeat across all chains.

👉 Now all loops are on the hook.

Return Pass

  1. Yarn over with Color A, pull through 1 loop (edge stitch).
  2. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops at a time until only 1 loop remains.

🎨 COLOR CHANGING RULE

You change color ONLY at the end of the return pass.

At the last pull-through-2, drop the old color and pull the new color through the final 2 loops.

This makes the edge clean and beautiful.

🔶 STEP 3 — Begin Pattern

The color order repeats like this:

A → B → C → A → B → C → (repeat)

Below is the exact detail for each row:

🧵 ROW 1 — Color A (TKS)

Forward Pass:

  1. Skip the edge stitch (never worked).
  2. Insert hook between the front and back vertical bars of the next stitch.
  3. Yarn over, pull up a loop.
  4. Repeat TKS across the entire row.

Return Pass:

  • Yarn over, pull through 1 loop.
  • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops repeatedly.
  • At last pull-through-2 → switch to Color B.

🧵 ROW 2 — Color B (TKS)

Work exactly like Row 1:

Forward Pass:

  • TKS across the entire row.

Return Pass:

  • Normal return pass.
  • Last pull-through-2 → switch to Color C.

🧵 ROW 3 — Color C (TKS)

Same as Row 1 & 2.

Return Pass:

  • Switch to Color A at the last pull-through-2.

🔁 REPEAT

Repeat Rows 1–3 forever:

A → B → C → A → B → C…

This creates the beautiful woven vertical color pattern you see in your photo.

⭐ IMPORTANT TIPS

🔸 Tension

The woven look comes only if your loops are tall and even.
Pull loops up to the height of your hook.

🔸 Edge Stitch

Never work into the first vertical bar.
Always insert under both loops of the side chain for a clean edge.

🔸 Prevent Curling

Tunisian crochet always curls.
You can reduce this by:

  • Using a hook 1–2 sizes bigger
  • Blocking your finished piece
  • Adding a simple border around it
