Step-by-step to make Crochet Stitch

Posted on November 20, 2025

Here is a step-by-step tutorial so you can make the exact crochet fabric in the photo.
This stitch is Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HbHDC), worked in rows.

I’ll explain slowly, clearly, with each movement of the hook.

🧢✨ HERRINGBONE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET β€” SUPER DETAILED TUTORIAL

βœ… 1. FOUNDATION CHAIN

  1. Make a slip knot.
  2. Chain any number of stitches.
  3. Add 2 extra chains for turning.

Example:
If you want a 40-stitch width β†’ Chain 42.

βœ… 2. FIRST ROW (VERY DETAILED)

⭐ Stitch: Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HbHDC)

Each stitch is a modified half double crochet that slants to the side.

How to work ONE HbHDC stitch:

Step 1 β€” Yarn Over

Wrap the yarn behind and over your hook once.

Now you have 1 loop + wrapped yarn.

Step 2 β€” Insert hook

Insert your hook into the 3rd chain from the hook.

Step 3 β€” Pull up a loop

YO and pull the yarn through the chain.
You now have 3 loops on your hook.

These loops from left-to-right are:

  1. Loop from pulling up the yarn
  2. Loop from the yarn-over
  3. Loop closest to the hook tip

Step 4 β€” Key HERRINGBONE movement

This is what makes the special texture:

πŸ‘‰ Pull the FIRST loop on your hook through the SECOND loop.

To do this:

  • Use your hook to grab the first loop
  • Pull it over the second loop
  • Now you will have 2 loops left on your hook

Your hook feels like it’s doing a β€œmini slip stitch” inside the stitch.

Step 5 β€” Finish the stitch

YO and pull through both loops on the hook.
This completes the HbHDC.

Repeat Steps 1–5 across the entire row.

βœ… 3. SECOND ROW AND NEXT ROWS

At the end of the row:

  1. Chain 2 (not tight).
  2. Turn your work.

Work each next row like this:

  1. YO
  2. Insert hook into the top V of the next stitch (normal stitch placement)
  3. YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
  4. Pull first loop through second loop
  5. YO, pull through the remaining 2 loops

Repeat all across.

πŸ“Œ IMPORTANT TIPS FOR GETTING THE SAME LOOK AS THE PHOTO

βœ” Tight pull-through motion

When you pull the first loop through the second loop, keep it:

  • smooth
  • not too tight
  • just enough to make the stitch β€œlean”

βœ” Don’t use tight tension

The fabric in your picture looks soft and flexible.
Loose + even tension helps the texture stand out.

βœ” Use multi-color gradient yarn

The photo uses a yarn that transitions from:

  • pink β†’
  • cream β†’
  • light blue β†’
  • purple

This enhances the diagonal stitch lines.

βœ” Work in BOTH loops (normal top V)

Do not insert into the back loop or front loop only.
The texture comes from the stitch, not from special placement.
