How to make Crochet Flower

Posted on November 12, 2025

Here’s a clear step-by-step guide to make the crochet flower square shown in the image:

✅ Skill level: Easy–Intermediate
✅ Techniques used: Magic ring, puff/petal stitches, double crochet, working in rounds

🌸 Detailed Crochet Pattern for the Flower Square

✅ Materials

  • Yarn:
    • Yellow (center)
    • Pink (petals)
    • Beige/Brown (square background)
  • Hook: size suitable for your yarn (usually 3.0–4.0 mm for medium yarn)
  • Scissors
  • Needle for weaving ends

✅ ROUND 1: Yellow Center (12 stitches)

  1. Make a magic ring.
  2. Chain 2 (this counts as your first half double crochet – HDC).
  3. Work 11 more HDC into the magic ring.
    Total: 12 HDC
  4. Pull the ring tight.
  5. Slip stitch into the first HDC to close.

✅ Now you have a small yellow circle.

✅ ROUND 2: Pink Petals (12 petals)

You will make long puff petals.

For each petal:

  1. Attach pink yarn to any stitch.
  2. Chain 1.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a tall loop (about 1.5–2 cm long).
  4. Repeat step 3 5 times (you will have many loops on hook).
  5. Yarn over and pull through ALL loops.
  6. Chain 1 to close the puff (important).

💡 Tip: Pull each loop tall so petals look soft and fluffy.

Repeat this in each of the 12 stitches around.

Slip stitch to finish the round.

✅ Now you have a pink flower with 12 petals.

✅ ROUND 3: Creating the Base for the Square (working behind petals)

  1. Turn your work slightly so you can see the base behind petals.
  2. Insert hook under the stitch that holds the petals, or in the back loops.
  3. Attach beige/brown yarn.

Pattern:

  • (First side) Chain 3 (counts as DC)
  • DC in next stitch
  • (Corner): 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC all in same stitch
  • DC in next 2 stitches
  • (Corner): 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC in same stitch
  • DC in next 2 stitches
  • (Corner): 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC
  • DC in next 2 stitches
  • (Corner): 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC

Slip stitch to join.

✅ Now your circle has turned into a square shape.

✅ ROUND 4: Square Border

  1. Chain 3.
  2. DC in each stitch across the side.
  3. In each corner:
    2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC.

Work all the way around.

Slip stitch to join.

✅ You now have a complete finished square!

✅ Finishing

  • Cut yarn.
  • Weave all ends with needle.
  • Block the square to shape it perfectly.

✅ Tips for Perfect Petals

  • Keep loops the same height.
  • Make petals in a consistent direction.
  • Don’t pull petals too tight.
  • Use soft yarn for a fluffy flower.
