Beautiful Crochet Flower granny square

Posted on November 9, 2025

That’s a crochet flower granny square — it combines a puff stitch flower center with a classic granny square border. Here’s how to make it step-by-step 🌼

🧶 MATERIALS

  • Yarn: Medium weight (category 3 or 4)
    • Yellow – for flower center
    • White – for petals and background
  • Hook: 3.5 mm – 4.0 mm
  • Scissors & tapestry needle

🌸 ROUND 1 – Yellow Flower Center

We’ll start with a puff-stitch flower.

  1. Make a magic ring.
(Or chain 4 and join with slip stitch to form a ring.)
  2. Chain 2 – does not count as a stitch.
  3. Make 8 puff stitches into the ring:
    • Yarn over, insert hook in ring, pull up a loop (3 times total, you’ll have 7 loops on hook).
    • Yarn over, pull through all 7 loops.
    • Chain 1 to close the puff.
  4. After 8 puffs, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first puff stitch.
  5. Fasten off the yellow yarn. Pull tight to close the ring.

🟡 You now have a round flower with 8 puffy petals.

⚪ ROUND 2 – White Petal Base

We’ll crochet between the petals.

  1. Attach white yarn in any chain-1 space between two yellow puff stitches.
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  3. In the same space, work 2 double crochets (dc) → forms your first cluster.
  4. Chain 1.
  5. In the next space between puffs, make 3 dc, chain 1.
  6. Repeat all the way around: (3 dc, ch 1) in each space.
  7. Join with slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3.

You should have 8 groups of 3 dc and 8 chain-1 spaces.

⚪ ROUND 3 – Start of Square Shape

Now we turn the circle into a square.

  1. Slip stitch into the next 2 dc and into the next space.
  2. Corners: Chain 3 (counts as dc), work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in the same space → that’s your first corner.
  3. Side: In the next space, make 3 puff stitches, chain 1.
(Each puff stitch = yarn over, insert, pull up loop × 3, yarn over pull through all loops, ch 1 to close)
  4. In the next space, make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) → next corner.
  5. Repeat this pattern around:
    • Corners = (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)
    • Between corners = 3 puff stitches separated by ch 1
  6. Join with slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3.

Now you should clearly see a square shape with puff-stitch stripes between each corner.

⚪ ROUND 4 – Background Expansion

  1. Slip stitch into next 2 dc and into the corner space.
  2. Chain 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc → first corner made.
  3. Work 3 dc in each space between clusters along the side.
  4. In the next corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) again.
  5. Continue this all around the square.
  6. Join with a slip stitch and fasten off.

This completes one full motif. You can block it to make it flat and crisp.

✨ OPTIONAL – ADDITIONAL ROUNDS

If you want a larger square:

  • Continue repeating granny-style rounds with white yarn.
  • Each new round: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corners, and 3 dc in each space along sides.

🔹 QUICK SYMBOL GUIDE

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • puff st = puff stitch (YO, insert, pull up loop × 3, YO pull through all, ch 1)
