Easy to make crochet tunisian

Posted on October 16, 2025

This image shows a crochet project that combines two colors of yarn (white and purple) to create a striped or layered pattern using Tunisian crochet (you can tell from the way the stitches are held on the hook).

Here’s how you can make it:

🧶 What You’re Making

You are crocheting a Tunisian simple stitch fabric that alternates between purple and white yarns, giving a beautiful layered look.
This technique is done on a long crochet hook (called a Tunisian hook), which holds many loops at once — similar to knitting.

✨ What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Two contrasting colors (here: white and purple)
  • Hook: A Tunisian crochet hook (longer than a regular hook, same size as you’d use for the yarn weight)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

🔰 Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Foundation Chain (Color A – Purple)

  1. Make a slip knot with your purple yarn.
  2. Chain any even number of stitches (for example, chain 30 or 40 depending on your project width).
  3. Starting in the second chain from the hook, insert the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop — do not complete the stitch. Leave the loop on your hook.
  4. Repeat this across the chain. You’ll have one loop per chain on your hook. 👉 This is called the Forward Pass (FP).
  5. Now work the Return Pass (RP):
    • Yarn over, pull through 1 loop only (edge stitch).
    • Then yarn over, pull through 2 loops repeatedly across the row until only 1 loop remains.
✅ You’ve completed your Foundation Row in purple.

Step 2: Row 2 – Tunisian Simple Stitch (Color B – White)

Now switch to white yarn.

  1. Do not turn your work.
  2. Insert the hook under the vertical bar of the next stitch (the little front “post” of each stitch from the previous row).
  3. Yarn over with white, pull up a loop, and keep it on your hook.
  4. Repeat across the row — you should have the same number of loops as before. 👉 That’s your Forward Pass in white.
  5. Return Pass:
    • Yarn over, pull through 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops repeatedly until one loop remains.
✅ You’ve finished the first white row.

Step 3: Row 3 – Back to Purple

Switch back to purple yarn.

  1. Insert hook into each vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop — same as before.
  2. When all loops are on your hook, do the Return Pass:
    • Yarn over, pull through 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops across the row.
    ✅ Purple row done!

Step 4: Repeat the Color Pattern

Keep alternating:

  • Purple row
  • White row

Each color layer builds a striped and woven effect that looks 3D.

🪡 Finishing the Edge (Bind-Off)

When your piece reaches the desired length:

  1. Work one last row in your chosen final color.
  2. Bind off by doing:
    • Insert hook under the vertical bar,
    • Yarn over and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook (like a slip stitch).
  3. Continue across the row.
  4. Cut yarn, leaving a few inches of tail, and weave in the ends.

🌼 Optional Tips

  • Keep tension loose to avoid curling.
  • To prevent edges from curling, add a Tunisian purl stitch border or regular crochet border.
  • You can carry the unused yarn along one edge, or cut it and rejoin if you prefer clean color changes.
